NICE guilelines

Could somebody shed some light, please, on a layman's version of these?

I often see them referred to, but when I search online they come up with 100s of things I don't understand!

Also, is a gp required to follow them, or would it just be best practice if they did?

Thanks, if anyone can give me any pointers.

Is there something that you’re looking for, specifically?

CatonMat · 02/11/2021 15:16

Not particularly, but I do have a lot of health issues going on and feel I'm not always getting listened to or supported.

I just fancied having a float around the guidelines for my own satisfaction, but, so many lists come up.

What condition or treatment specifically? Then we can link you to the basic recommendations part, rather than the evidence and rationale behind them all.

There are over 300 guidelines, you'd really need to know what your interested in

thedevilinablackdress · 02/11/2021 15:32

you're

No, a GP doesn't necessarily have to follow the NICE guidelines, they inform clinical practice but don't dictate it. The GP doesn't have to follow the guidelines if it isn't in the patient's best interests. They can exercise their own clinical judgement but they would have to be able to justify their decision not to follow the guidelines.

CatonMat · 02/11/2021 15:39

Thank you.
Liver disease would be one of the conditions.

Whilst there are resources available for members of the public on a wealth of you’ve, NICE guidance and pathways are most useful for health and care professionals, to ensure that we are following the most up to date guidelines and correct path to diagnosis/treatment. As with a lot of things in life, a little information can be a dangerous thing without the appropriate context.

That said, I’m sure there are many of us who would be happy to help signpost you to some resources if you have particular concerns

Thanks, cheshirecat99.
I often see the nice guidelines quoted, and thought I would check out what they're all about and how they work.

Thats helpful to know, purely out of interest really.

Thanks all.
I'm not planning to rush to my gp flourishing the guidelines at him, nor frighten myself to death reading and only half understanding stuff.

I think I'm finally on the right track with my health problems.
It's taken a while, but I'm getting there, slowly.
