New Crown 7 Weeks Ago Still Painful Biting/Sensitive

I had a crown on an upper molar, 2nd from the back for over 20 years. During lockdown it fractured and I went during the summer to have impressions for a new one.

I had said crown fitted 7 weeks ago and was told to expect some sensitivity but he was vague about it.

Anyway, when it didn't settle I went back and saw a different dentist after the 3 week mark and he filed it down a bit.

It's still sensitive to mainly cold and I can't chew anything hard on it or it gives me pain.
I have just finished with the extended cold everyone has had so phoned them yesterday to enquire about it again.

Firstly, it seems that because I paid a bit extra for a porcelain one that I'm in line to have to pay privately for a root canal or indeed anything else that needs done (which wasn't explained at the time to me). I'm more bothered about the tooth being sorted to be honest but just wondered what others' take was on this.

Secondly, they are recommending root canal but is there anything else that can be done? Bearing in mind that this may potentially now cost me even more, is there a chance that this could be recurring and I end up paying more and more money.

Would I be better just cutting my losses and asking them to remove it? I just don't know what to do for the best. I'm not wild on the idea of having to go back at all and am so disappointed that this is happening.

Another thing I don't understand is that after the crown was fitted before I left, he told me that the tooth wasn't great underneath so not to be surprised if I needed to come back for a root canal. Why wasn't it suggested in the first place I wonder, especially when I'd just had an expensive crown just fitted which could potentially be damaged if tinkered with again?

Any advise or suggestions most welcome.
Thanks in advance for reading.

Many things can cause the tooth (with or without a crown) to be sensitive to cold - receding gums, fracture, infection, etc. The dentist needs to look at it again.

A root canal isn't done as a first step normally as it greatly weakens the tooth structure and makes the tooth more prone to fracturing later.

I'd be bloody furious that they put a new crown on when they could see the tooth wasn't good, without advising you. That's quite shocking to me.

Should add though that I've had a root canal through a crown. So it can be done, but it wasn't fun. Those bad boys are hard to drill through. I had it done privately and it cost a lot but at least they knew what they were doing.

Thankyou, I'll mention this when I go tomorrow.

Yes I did wonder why it was done that way. My heart sank because I was already feeling a sigh of relief that that would be it done with - financially as well as for my nerves.

I think I might ask this tomorrow.

I've just been speaking to my sister who had a similar problem and needed 2 root canals on her tooth then it ended up breaking and they had to get the roots out. Shock
