DD has started blinking her eyes excessively

FOr about the past week my 3 and a half dd has been constantly blinking her eyes. She has had a very slight cold so I wondered if they were itchy or dry (she hasn't been rubbing them) or whether she has something in them, although doesn't seem to.

Could it just be a habit she has developed or might it be connected to her eyesight?

Does anyone have any experience of this please?

My ds does this alot, especially when he is tired, he had his eyes tested at school & they said they were fine, i think it is a habit for ds, if your worried though i would say get her eyes tested to put your mind at ease.

thanks for your reply, I was feeling a little lonely here!

I will get her eyes tested, they have never been looked at. I though it might be connected with tiredness but at the moment she is doing it all through the day.

Dd did it for a bit when she was 3 - I took her to the doctor and he said it was just a habit, and not to worry about it or draw attention to it, and she duly stopped.

Ds was doing this so took him for an eye test and he needed glasses.

DD(7) did this for a couple of months earlier this year. It was only reading your post that reminded me of it. She must have stopped somewhere along the way because I can't remember the last time she did it. (bad mother emoticon)

Thanks everyone, I have been worrying. She doesn't seem aware she is doing it and when I have mentioned it (which I probably shouldn't have) she just does it faster.

Both my mum and my mil who look after her a day each have mentioned it as well.

I used to do this alot when I was little. It turned into a v bad habit and it was even worse when someone pointed it out.
I used to be aware that I was doing it and tried really hard to stop, the more I tried the faster I blinked!
Then overnight I seemed to stop doing it.
I agree with tort/shell and try not to draw attention to it (I know it must be hard)
She will probably stop doing it in her own time.

She may be doing this because she likes the feel of it..... Honest, I once knew a child who kept shaking his head to the side, when asked he said he liked the feel!

rosealbie · 11/12/2007 22:14

She did say her eyes and her cough were telling her to do it

we've just been through this with ds...the teachers noticed and so got passed round the spectrum of hvs, gps and opticians...finally ended up with the hospital opthamlmologist who's diagnosis was "there's nothing wrong...it's just one of those funny things 4 year olds do"....I could have told them that six months ago!
