With adentonsillectomy is it normal to be in alot more discomfort on the 7th day?

dd1 had the procedure last Wednesday and has been doing quite well , except for the late afternoon and nights, were shes had to have a cocktail of medicines to get through comfortably, as she also has a chesty cold/virus on top of it all. Thankfully weve been able to reduce the amounts of medicine quite considerably.

Shes had one night of sleeping through since the procedure ,which was a total surprise but last night was quite bad as she suffers sleep apnea and night terrors and this went on for over 2.5hrs with her crying and throwing herself around the bed , but not awakening for the whole time.

Today however shes not wanted to eat that much and now is complaining of earache (which I expected) , but shes been very irritable today crying loads and wanting lots of constant reassurance, not eating very much,(despite salt and vinegar crisps not long after surgery but thats another story lol)!!& talking with a vibration to her voice.

She complains of being tired but refuses to sleep during the day, so weve been trying to get her into bed earlier to no avail.

I just thought may be this period is quite normal and not a sign of secondary infection as she has no temprature???

Im feeling a call to the ward might be helpful , but wanted to know other parents experiences with the recovery side.

I am so glad I can help you with this one! My 4yr old had adenotonsillectomy 4 weeks ago - we are in Houston - and we had ++++ advice before surgery regarding increased pain at 6-8 days post surgery - apparently the 'scabs coming off'. It happened just like this with my DD and as predicted, it was the end of it. 2 days later, no complaints at all. Apparently only reasons for concern are: high fever and bleeding.

melsy · 11/12/2007 18:14

ah great thank you for your quick reply Riana , very reassuring. Are the scabs the white gungy bits that have built up? Its day 8 tomorrow and shes been getting more upset by increments the last 48hrs. So hopefully out of the dark woods I hope and and wil see the light by Thursday!!

I hope so , Im beat and so is she poor thing , soooo exhausted. This problem been going on for months.

Hi Housten btw, Ive been there Im sure !

Just wanted to add another one - our friends were told the same thing - day 7 is the most hideous and then it should ease off substantially. Good luckx

strawberry · 11/12/2007 18:20

Ditto previous advice. Ds's consultant said keep going with all the painkillers even if you think they're ok. He said space them out regularly through the day and not just when the pain starts to keep the pain under control. What painkillers do you have?

Riana2005 · 11/12/2007 18:20

Yes, white bits are the (smelly) scabs. My DD particularly cried when sneezing or coughing, understandably. I am assuming you are feeding yours ice cream all the time? I told my DD that her favourite chocolate ice cream had some magic in it for sore throats, and gave her a small scoop every hour or two. Over here they also remind you over and over to keep the throat wet, so really push the fluid intake as much as you can (water, milk or apple juice). You are nearly through this, hang in there!

Riana2005 · 11/12/2007 18:27

We did not sleep the night before the op - listened to her breathing on the monitor - torture with the apnea silences! Mine was fine at hospital until they tried to take her off alone to the theatre, then I ended up having to don the white painters suit and go in with her... cried when I left her there on the steel table under GA, she did not look alive (afterwards I felt bit silly to have worried so much, as tonsillectomies are such minor procedures of course, but that matters very little when it's your DD doesn't it?)

melsy · 11/12/2007 18:39

thank you look3 & strawberry.

Ive offered ice lollys and boiled sweet lolls today and 250mg paractemol and lots of cold fruits.

ahh you had monitors yuck , tht must have been difficult . Im glad we didnt have to see that and know how bad the apnoea's were. She had quite severe symptoms though from it. Has there been great improvement for her Riana??

My dh held dd1 in a chair for the gas and air to go to sleep, I couldn't watch and just had my hand on her head over his shoulder and gave her healing. It was when they laid her on the gurney and we gave her a kiss and sen our love that it really tore at me and I had to run out quick. I know what you mean how its such a simple procedure and there were kids there were kids at great ormond st with severe diseases, but this is our little angels and they are precious and someone else is looking after them, its not easy is it.

Melsy, the apnea and snoring seem like a bad dream now, nothing at all left! I hope your DD recovers just as well - it is so brilliant to see how much more energy my DD has now (and I never really thought there was a problem before...)! I'll be thinking of you for the next day or two especially - let us know how she does.

TroutSprout · 11/12/2007 20:26

Yes..dd had adentonsillectomy last year. She hit a really bad patch on days 5-7 (after doing really well) and then suddenly really improved.
Hang in there.
Keep the throat wet and moving. Keep up with the pain killers otherwise she won't want to move/use her throat and then you are back in a vicious circle.Drinks ..sips every 10 mins was good. Eat if she can.
Good luck

melsy · 11/12/2007 22:04

ahhhhhh now that sounds good Riana , cant wait for that feeling and for dd1 most of all to have an increased qaulity of life.

Just hanging on by the ends of my very long nails troutsprout . I feel bad that I didnt give her more than the paracetomol during the day , but felt bad doping her up so much. She has been very thirsty though , so shes been having water all day thankfully.

melsy · 11/12/2007 22:12

awww hi pelvic sweets , hows the driving going?

Yes glad the nasty nasty bit is behind us, just the last small mountain to climb and then I hope Xmas and Nw yr can be fun and enjoyablefor us all.

Must get some sleep somehow , I dread bed time at the mo, one due to excessive, (bloody annoying painful), coughing on my part and two hearing/listening out for dd1 and her night terrors and crying.

Madoldcatlady · 11/12/2007 22:56

DD2 has adenotonsilectomy 18 months ago for recurrent tonsilitis ad sleep apnoea. She's been fab since. She's hardly had a day off school this year where as previously she was off almost more than she was there.

She was always small for her age and thin. Shr wore clothes at least a year smaller than her actual age. Now she's a well built girl and for the first time ever I buy clothes of the appropriate age/size.

melsy · 12/12/2007 10:20

ahhh great news, another success story madoldcatlady.

Well last night was probably the worst night ever in my history of bad nights. I coughed and coughed all night and dd1 cried and cried. We had to plie her with codeine , diclofenac and lots of water. She was in terrible terrible pain and couldnt sleep till gone 4am.

I look and feel like Ive been punched in the eyes and dd1 is boinging around me now like nothing ever happened!!!!. She has however been able to clear her throat for the 1st time and it looks like a lot of the white has gone as I can see the back of her throat for the 1st time too. It looks all white and purple ????

Can I unashamedly ask for sympathy and virtual hugs today , Im home alone with dd1 and 2and a very sore chest and a very very tired body and mind!!

BadKittenInAPearTree · 12/12/2007 10:50

{{{Melsy}}} it sounds like a snuggle down with telly day. You must be utterly exhausted.

melsy · 12/12/2007 10:56

I would have , but silly arse that I am didnt re arrange the cleaners and they are coming right bang in the middle of a good time to snuggle with dd1 on the sofa as dd2 will be in bed, TYPICAL. Id cancel them , but the house is a disgusting tip .

Was really looking forward to quiet time then too.

OP posts:
Riana2005 · 12/12/2007 17:49

Ah Melsy, what terrible timing to be home alone with them. Can you ring a friend to come over and entertain them for an hour or two while you rest? Otherwise, like Badkitten I think a telly day is in order! ((hugs)) It really sounds like it will be downhill from here on!!!

Riana2005 · 12/12/2007 17:51

Just realised it's too late in the day over there for help now . Hope this is a much better night for all of you.

melsy · 12/12/2007 17:57

Such a blah day in the end. Im sitting with both dd's in front of the telly and Im staring, I dont know what I am really , just feel flat , alone and exuasted. We werent able to have hot bath or showers today as weve delayed replacing the boiler as it was to much upheavel,(walls need coming down etc), but we found a way of getting heat , but it just wouldnt work today. We all need nice hot baths and our hair washed . Im feeling very sorry for myself , and so is dd1.

Dd1 is still up and down with the pain today, I dont understand I thought she would feel much better by now, esp after last night , thought that was the peak of it being day 7.

Melsy, just let me know if she's better now please!

melsy · 15/12/2007 10:04

Yes much better , seem to be having longer bouts between medication (although she found dinner hard and it was egg noodles in soup, poor thing) and a much better night lastnight, she woke at 1am for water, and was able to go back to sleep wth no more diclofenac.

Her voice has gone up several octaves, she sounds like shes on helium now!!! Her voice used to be in her boots!!!

Thank you for asking Rianna very thoughtful xx.
