Broken toe, 38 weeks pg. Bother with walk in/a and e or not?

Fairly sure I’ve broken my toe. The one next to my big toe. I bent it really weirdly when it got caught on a rug earlier. It hurts to walk on it and I can’t bend it without serious pain. It’s throbbing now and I’m not moving it.

I’m 38 weeks pregnant so don’t fancy sitting in a and e let alone causing them more work at the moment. Our local one is really busy so would rather not go unless absolutely necessary.

We do have a walk in place near that I believe does x rays but I’m not even sure I could have one!

Will it just heal? Any advice from someone whose done the same would be appreciated.

Bumping for you as I don’t know the answer however I don’t think they do very much for broken toes these days. I don’t even think they strap them up. And I don’t think pregnant women can be getting x-rays. So you’d be there for nothing?

Perhaps others more wise can advise. Or phone 111 and see what they say however they’d prob get you in but I don’t see the point if they can’t do anything?

Nothing much they can do for broken toes I'm afraid.
You can wrap it to the next toe and it'll help heal and save any future knocks.
How bent is it? Does it look lop sided or is it at an angle?
If an angle then they need seen to, if just abit wobbly treat at home.

Thanks both. I’ll get some tape tomorrow.

It’s a weird one isn’t it! It’s not bent, maybe a bit swollen. The dentist wouldn’t X-ray my teeth the other day so I think I would be wasting everyone’s time going!

Don’t think there is anything they will do other than confirm the toe is broken. I was told my little toe would heal by itself, but you could tape yours up as it’s a bigger toe!

SantasCat · 26/10/2021 18:50

Tape it to your big toe with micropore tape. Put a wee bit of folded up gauze in between the two toes. Try and keep it up on a stool and take paracetamol if you can.

NHS advice is treat at home unless it’s your big toe, there’s an open wound, it’s sticking out at an odd angle or the bone is sticking out.

You have my sympathy! I’m pretty sure I broke one of mine a couple of months ago and it’s only just now back to normal.

Bennetgirl · 26/10/2021 18:55

Thank you! Could really do without hobbling right now 😂

I broke my little toe a few years ago, I found the best thing to wear afterwards was Birkenstock’s as the rigid soles didn’t bend and my toe was more supported.

BarbieCampervan · 26/10/2021 19:04

When my son broke his toe, he was given a special boot to keep it still. It was a middle toe. So presumably if you can keep it still by another means this will be sufficient.

But it's not correct to say they don't do anything. You want to give the bone a chance to join back together neatly.

Can you go early in the morning to a walk in and at least get it x rayed to make sure either way?

romdowa · 26/10/2021 19:06

They will treat any toe if its bent weirdly. You may have dislocated it and if it's broken and the bone is out of line then it will heal that way. Don't strap it yourself and go and get seen.

Lynne1Cat · 26/10/2021 19:11

Whether or not you go somewhere and have an x-ray, the only thing they'll do is to strap or put sticking plaster from your broken toe to the one next to it. It will heal in a couple of weeks.

Bennetgirl · 26/10/2021 19:18

Maybe I’ll see how it is on Friday and brave a very early a and e visit. It’s getting quite painful now. Could do with the baby coming early for the gas and air 😂

Even if you go to A&E they won't do anything other than strap it. Particularly as you are pregnant they'll be cautious about painkillers.

Just rest it, elevate and put ice on it. Waste of time going to A&E imo

mynameisigglepiggle · 26/10/2021 21:05

I once caught my little toe and it really badly bruised. I went to the walk in centre near to me and was told they don't do anything for broken toes.

In fact he said if it's healed after 6 weeks it's just bruised if it's still hurting it's probably broken!!

Ughmaybenot · 26/10/2021 21:08

They’ll do nothing for a broken toe I’m afraid, so you’d be wasting your time (and a&e’s time) to go in. Get it strapped and kept as still as possible, that’ll see you right.
Bad luck tho, bloody painful.
