Perioral dermatitis

So I'm pretty sure I've got perioral dermatitis.

I've had it before and it went away on it's own after trying herbal tablets and Caneston as well as other antimicrobial creams.

This time I'm pregnant and it's not going away. I've ordered antifungal creams online to avoid going to the doctors as they are hopeless.

I've read up loads on perioral dermatitis. I've been taking probiotics too this time but no luck and it's been months now.

Seems like the only thing left to try is antibiotics or topical antibiotics. So I called the doctors this morning and got an appointment. As soon as I said perioral dermatitis she kind of laughed at me and said oh have you been looking online. (Don't think she'd heard of it by her reaction, as if I was challenging her) Then said she'd prescribe me hydrocortisone cream. I knew that was coming! I did say I'd read that this was going to make it worse but she said oh I've been working in dermatology and pharmacists are reluctant to give hydrocortisone out but in her experience it works great.

I didn't want to argue with her so just said thanks and took the prescription. But now don't even want to use it. Should I just go online and purchase the topical antibiotic cream? I seen I can order Fucidin on the online pharmacy. (Also read make sure it's not fucidin H as that has hydrocortisone in with it)

Just hate going to the doctors about this as it's always as if they take offence when you don't agree with them. I've put on the hydrocortisone cream a few hours ago but not going to use it again going by the amount of info online warning people with PD to avoid it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks.

It’s also interesting what’s been said above about moisturisers feeding the yeast/fungus problem. I’m sure at the time of mine I read that the only men diagnosed with perioral dermatitis were found to have been using their partner’s face creams… I imagine this has changed since then as cosmetics for men are much more popular

@yasxcat, can I ask where did you order Fucidin? I thought it's prescription only?

You can order prescription medicines online on some websites. You usually need to fill out your details and answer questions, then it's prescribed to you. It's obviously more costly this way but I can't be bothered going back to the doctors and arguing with them about steriod creams and PD. s://www.pharmacyonline.co.uk/online-doctor/impetigo/fucidin/?ref=PPC&gclid=CjwKCAjwzt6LBhBeEiwAbPGOgYZz7VIxNvMclkIYfKK6KF9wAUuyom94-2n2gT7bu0JQFnouh7XJLBoCv4kQAvD_BwE

@yasxcat, thanks.

So the fucidin antibiotic cream has near enough cleared my PD after only a few days of applying a thin layer 3 times a day! Just some slight redness left around my nose but no new bumps or dryness at all.

Thank you! Yeah so relieved. Can't actually believe how well a tube of antibiotic cream could work!

I feel your pain. I have had Perioral D for the last 4 months and it spread and spread and got worse. I too have been through a never ending cycle of prescriptions including hydrocortisone, antibiotic cream (fudicin) , anti fungal cream, and I’ve also tried lots of different creams and methods myself including salt water therapy, tea tree, neem etc.

I’ve finally found the solution and I’m happy to say it’s completely got rid of it in just two days…….

Lyonsleaf Zinc & Calendula Cream
bepanthen nappy cream

i alternate and put these two on each around 4 times a day including a generous layer of the zinc one overnight.

both creams cost under 8 quid.
i honestly cannot believe the results and have just narrowly avoided a 250 pound consultation with a private dermatologist!!

Defo try this, I’m hoping it works for everyone suffering with PD out there!!!

Hi @yasxcat just wondering if the Fucidin cream worked in the long term? Thanks!

QueenOfHiraeth · 06/06/2023 21:55

I have something similar to perioral dermatitis but on the inside of my mouth. I have tried Gengigel mouthwash and gel, Daktarin oral gel, several SLS free toothpastes and have changed my inhalers, used them via spacer and rinse mouth well after use. I even tried leaving my inhalers off for a while but it is still horrid.
If anyone has thoughts on that I'd appreciate it as it is really annoying

Have you asked your dentist to have a look? They might be the best person.

Hi @KateBarrow very interested to try the Lyonsleaf Zinc & Calendula Cream
and bepanthen nappy cream... there is some hope! I have had this for nearly 5 months and have only tried natural methods but am getting to the point where I feel like antibiotics is the only option left. I can see you posted a year ago.. did these 2 creams keep it bay in the long term? Thank you! xx

Yes. Dentist initially thought inhalers then, when that was disproved, suggested SLS. We are both now at a loss...

Hi I know this is old now. Dermol is steroid cream so technically it should have made your rash worse?

yasxcat · 27/01/2024 17:11

Not sure who you are replying to. But yes steroid cream would in the long run make perioral dermatitis worse. It the short term it will seem as if it is making it better.

Just checked and I don't think dermol 500 lotion is steriodal? It's the lotion doctors usually prescribed for eczema etc but it's just an antimicrobial emollient moisturiser.

OP posts:
grasisgreener · 27/01/2024 17:30

Thanks for replying yasxcat, someone suggested Dermol, thought I was replying to them. When I looked it up it said it contained steroids but maybe it was a different Dermol. Did you manage to completely clear your pod with the antibiotic cream? Ive just started using Daktarin but 2 days in it’s looking and feeling worse

ElizabethVonArnim · 28/01/2024 00:03

Dermol's non-steroidal, just emollient and anti-microbial, as the OP said. Good stuff, does no harm (unless you accidentally set yourself on fire, so try not to do this).

yasxcat · 28/01/2024 10:50

Yes it went away. I had to apply a thin layer anfew times a day for a good couple of weeks to make sure it was totally away. Hopefully yous starts to clear up soon.
