recurrent croup

I wonder if anyone has any ideas/experience of this? Dd2 (23 months) has permanently enlarged tonsils and is getting recurrent bouts of croup. Would the two be related? Any ideas of what I can or should be doing? Thanks!

hi ya
my ds is 3 and gets recurrent croup, hes had 15 attacks in the last 2 years and it drives me mad, he needs oral steroids with it, and also has been admitted to hosp over 10 times with it needed nebs as hes breathing has been so bad

im not sure on the 2, have u asked ur gp?

babalon · 11/12/2007 20:14

Does he have a fever with it at all? Epiglottitis is a differential diagnoses that comes with the symptoms of croup which could provide the link to the enlarged tonsils.

Have you seen a ENT specialist at all?

Take care and always question diagnosis if you have any doubt PLEASE!

have you tried a humidifier? my ds had croup recently and it really helped him. The one we bought cost about £35 in Argos and I would thoroughly recommend it!

thanks for all the suggestions

natalie - your poor ds (and you too). dd2 has had four bouts in about the last 6 mnths and getting more frequent, I guess because of the time of year.
our gps are pretty useless

babalon - thanks for the info about epiglottitis and interesting that there may be a connection. is it acute due to infection or a chronic condition? could the GP diagnose it? we've seen the local ENT people, but they just listed her for a tonsillectomy without actually looking in her mouth , so we're going elsewhere for a second opinion.

bodiddly - haven't got one but do put bowls of water by the radiator and try to keep the room well aired

Are you sure that it is just croup and not chest infection. ds1 had croup then bronchillitis - then on salbutamol for a year, just had croup/chest infection again - guess what - back on salbutamol.

Persistant cough, worse at night - ??asthma . I would see your GP again. Salbutamol definatley helps the night time cough. GP's do give it for persistant coughing.

Good Luck!
