Chronic post nasal drip

needtogetfit21 · 24/10/2021 11:32

I've suffered with this for years and it drives me mad. My ears are constantly itchy and my throat sore.

(So as not to drip feed I also suffer with fibro / chronic fatigue)

I use a nasal spray containing small amount of steroid daily but even this just keeps it just about bearable.

A nutritionist once told me it's due to a poor lymph system and lack of exercise can massively contribute to this. But I've been exercising and there's no change at all.

Anyone found anything that works?

I take a prescribed anti histamine at night for mine really helps, night was the worst for me.

I am
Prescribed loratodine but I didn't think this would specifically help with post nasal drip? I only take it during the high pollen months

Has a spontaneous spinal fluid leak been ruled out?

PennyWus · 24/10/2021 20:31

I have chronic sinus problems which cause post nasal drip, dry throat, cough, mouth breathing at night, headaches, toothache, fatigue etc.

I find Sterimar is helpful, and also steam inhalation, hot flannel over my face. At night I use a cold mist humidifier, olbas, and often have a flask of hot peppermint tea or lemon water at my bedside. Chewing is also good if you can find something healthy to chew, maybe some mentholated gum.

Cut down dairy as that can cause mucus production, drink absolutely loads of water, take a vitamin D supplement.

No, it's never been mentioned?

Thank you but my sinuses seem fine, only this horrible needing to clear sensation and sore throat / pain and VERY itchy ears ...

Does this cause a cough too?

steppingcarefully · 25/10/2021 05:05

I have had homeopathy for this in the past. It took a while to get the remedies right but it worked. I also bought a homeopathic remedy online which I used for a while, that helped but didn't clear it. It was a much weaker strength than what the homeopath gave me but she said it was ok to use as a top up.

Try cutting out dairy. I find that the dripping stops or reduces markedly when I do. Even when I eat tiny amounts of dairy, it happens.

thisgardenlife · 25/10/2021 05:28

I take cetirizine hydrochloride (an antihistamine) for this. Just half a tablet every day stops the chronic postnasal drip (also known as allergic rhinitis), and at certain times of the year it takes a whole tablet.

Ok thanks I'll try taking the loratidine daily and see if it helps

Interesting. I don't eat large amounts anyway so didn't think it would help much.

Naproxen and nortryptaline. The problem has been there for 15 years, long before these medications

Hi I’m a mom of two kids

Memyselfandmom · 05/12/2021 18:39

Hi @steppingcarefully, I would love to know which remedies she gave you. I have seen a few homeopaths but none seem to work.

ohlordabove · 05/12/2021 18:47

I'd love to find something that works...I've taken a double dose of antihistamine for months on end, had steroid nasal sprays, do plenty of exercise, and nothing has worked for me. I'm a bit baffled about the spinal leak suggestion...

What are you taking Naproxen for? And are you on something like omeprazole as well?

How long does it take to notice a difference if you cut out dairy?
