I need to help my daughter

My daughter was diagnosed with Crohn’s a year ago. She lives in Singapore and is seeing a consultant regularly. She’s on steroids and drugs called biologics. They seem to be controlling her flares but she has put on an enormous amount of weight. She is very upset about this and is exercising and controlling her food intake religiously but her weight continues to rise. Her consultant doesn’t appear to worry about this even though she has now developed fatty liver as a direct result of the huge weight gain. I have no idea how to help her and don’t know anything about the health care system out there …. can she ask for a second opinion re her medication for example. If this continues her Crohn’s might well be managed but the rest of her health , including her mental health will suffer. Please … can anyone offer advice ?

Is she on the steroids long term or just for flair ups? Have they tried the biologics alone to see if that’s enough?
The weight gain will be due to them rather than the biologics.

Originally she was on steroids for 3 months at what seemed like a high dose , as she had about 30 cm of very inflamed intestine. She gradually reduced this to zero. However , as a result of regular blood tests she was put back on steroids to control inflammatory markers . When she came off steroids totally she did manage to lose a bit of weight and sleep better. I’m so concerned about her as she is so down about her weight and the way she looks now. This morning she said that nothing fitted her any more , she had “ no neck “ and when she smiled her eyes disappear because of the fat ! She was saying she could soon become housebound. Is there anyone out there with advice ?

If it’s steroids it could partly be water retention too, if you Google steroid diet you should get some ideas of what foods she should be eating in order to both lose weight and minimise water retention. I’d be asking the doctor to review the steroids regularly to see if the dose could be reduced further or even stopped until needed again.
