Issue with jaw. GP or Dentist?

Developed a clicky right jaw a few months ago and has developed into stiffness and restricted movement of the jaw. I'm not in pain but should I consult a doctor or dentist or no one?

I would contact Dr .

Dentist. They can make you a splint to wear at night.

Sorry, meant to add, I have this and it's because of teeth grinding and jaw clenching.

You could just buy a moudable mouth guard. Cost me £10 on Amazon and is better than the one the NHS dentist made me for £125 😯

Dentist. Had similar issues and a locked jaw. They’re referred by to the hospital who made me a night gyard

Kummerspeck · 20/10/2021 22:30

Dentist definitely. They are experts on anything mouth and jaw

Dentist. I had this and I was referred on to a consultant doctor by the dentist. He did keyhole surgery and fixed it with about one or two days recovery. It stopped the clicking and allowed me to open my mouth fully. Brought on by grinding my teeth at night I think.

Dentist Smile

100% dentist

In my experience they'll both say it's not their responsibility and send you to the other one Sad dentist advised that unless my teeth were damaged he couldn't do anything. Dr won't do anything and refuses to prescribe any kind of muscle relaxant. I've been like this for nearly two years now.

I have this. It’s probably temporomandibular joint disorder. You can get a GP referral to a maxillofacial surgeon who might be able to operate and fix it, or if you’re unlucky like me won’t operate and tell you to just put up with it.
My dentist made me a mouth guard but it makes it worse and gives me lockjaw.
Apparently you can get Botox in the jaw muscle which can help.
Mine has been getting progressively worse and seems to accompany migraines now.

Thank you everyone for your replies. So I'm best seeing the dentist then. I'm definitely not a teeth grinder so not sure what's brought it on unless it's just my age as everything seems to be stiffening up lately!

Dentist or even orthodontist. I'm having ortho treatment for my bite at the moment and it's supposed to help with my TMJ disorder (that's colicky Jae to you and me!)

Lanique · 21/10/2021 11:38
