Ventricular Tachycardia?

I was sent to A&E yesterday afternoon as GP wanted to rule out a blood clot as I've had a very chesty cough with streaks of blood in the phlegm for the past 10 days.

My heart rate was fast in the GP surgery and also at A&E. My heart rate is always fast and after I had DS nearly 13 years ago they kept me in overnight for this reason but didn't find a cause.

I popped to the nurse's station yesterday to see where things were up to and she pulled my notes up, in the comments I could see something called VT which after googling it suggests Ventricular Tachycardia. It's really worried me.

My chest X ray was clear and bloods were fine, and ECG wasn't performed so I'm just confused why this was on my notes and why they mention it to me. The doctor before I was discharged just asked if I get anxious in hospital as my heart rate was high ( I do get anxious)

I've got a GP appointment on Friday but just wondering if anyone has any advice, thank you!

Sorry that should say, why they didn't mention it to me.

They would only diagnose vt on an ecg, were you hooked up to a heart monitor at all. I would be surprised they wouldnt treat this if it was vt.

Greybeardy · 19/10/2021 17:25

VT in this context is probably venous thromboembolism.

No, no heart monitor at all. They just took my pulse using the thing the pop onto your finger. That's why it seems so odd.

You would know if you had had an episode of ventricular tachycardia. As above I expect VT was short of venous thrombosis/thromboembolism. And shows why we should be careful with abbreviations.

Does that mean a blood clot? That would make more sense as they were wanting to rule out a blood clot on the lung which they did.

They cannot diagnose that without an ECG and if you had that then they would not have discharged you.

Are you sure it wasn’t VE?

Greybeardy · 19/10/2021 17:32

Yes - it means blood clot.

Ah that does make more sense, thank you!

It definitely said VT but it makes sense what Greybeardy said that it could have been referring to a blood clot. I did think it strange that they would diagnose without an ECG and then just discharge me.

I have ventricular tachycardia and you would definitely know if you firstly had it at all and secondly were experiencing and ‘episode’. Certainly wouldn’t be a secret you found out by glancing at your notes

Sorry to hear you have it, hope you're well. That's reassuring, thanks for your reply.
