Has anybody else suffered from numbness in both hands after a blood transfusion.

Im not sure what's causeing it, but ever since i had the baby it happen's every day when ever i lie down, im begining to think it be may due to having a blood transfusion.

I did see a doctor about it, because my hv said that should'nt happen, but doctor bent my hand's and arms about, and ask if that hurt i said no, then she said i was fine.

It's being a year and it still happen's, i just can't feel my hand's every morning when i wake up.

It's very unlikely to be anything to do with a blood transfusion, and much more likely to be with how you lie to sleep, causing you to press on a nerve in your neck

Try changing your pillows (use less or more), see if that helps.

You could see an osteopath or chiropractor for an opinion.

Mmm. I had numbness in my hands and arms after I had dd - which involved a pretty major blood transfusion. However, I never put it down to the transfusion - I think it was a nerve thing and it shifted reasonably quickly. I would go back to the docs - I would be really surprised if it was anything to do with the tranfusion, like Easy I think it is probably to do with a nerve. Let us know how you get on. BTW I am not dismissing your concerns - when I went numb I thought I was having a stroke!

Hi Musa. I have suffered from something that sounds the same as you in the past. I was giving splints to wear at night so that my hands could not bend. Also ask to see your local physio as there are excersices that you can do to help. What i had was called carpal tunnel syndrome. I hope this is of use.

Mafalda - me too - had the supports too... worked a treat.

efmach · 12/11/2004 09:38

Agree with mafalda, sounds more like carpal tunnel syndrome.

I am in exactly the same boat, blood transfusion after ds2 14 months ago. As I relax to go to sleep I get that tingling sensation and ..... well you know what worries leap in to your mind.

Am very interested in this thread. Maybe our nerves get weakened somehow after a gory birth?

If it's worse overnight or when you lie down, then I'd say it sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome too. Pregnancy can often be a trigger for carpal tunnel syndrome, due to the added pressure on the nerves that can occur when the hands swell. A physiotherapist can help, as can the wrist splints that the others have recommended. You may also find that night splints help, mine were made for me when my physio referred me to an occupational therapist. They didn't in my case but I know that some people find them useful.

Try going back to see your GP, or another GP at your practice, and see if you get more sympathetic treatment this time.

Thanks guy's for that, i also had an idea that i might have carpal tunnel syndrome.

Im gonna back back to the doctor's for another opinion.
