Anyone had genetic testing for cancer

has anyone any experiance of genetic testing for cancers.

My family has the BRACA2 gene and my mum was testing postive for the spelling mistake and is having her ovaries removed on Tuesday and in all likelyhood a double breast removal and reconstruction in the new year.

I am looking at too having the testing in the new year (have been through the councelling) and was wondering if anyone has any experiance of this and the subsequent decisions the result may bring.

If I am positive there is an 85% lifetime risk of breat cancer and a 50% chance of ovarian or primiary peritoniel cancer and although I am not that attatched to my norks (36H and a lift and reduction would be OK), I have not yet made the decision that my family is complete. Argggggggggggggg

Any words of wisdom please MN

I have no experience but my guess is that if you don't feel your family is complete they would be more than happy to go with regular screening until such time as you feel ready to have any surgery, wouldn't they? It must be very tough though.

I have been told that the sreening for the ovarian cancer will not be offered until I turn 35 (only a year or so away) and even then it is very hit and miss

It is, but awareness is very important with ovarian cancer- the symptoms are usually very non-specific but if you are at risk and are on the look-out then anything worrying would be likely to be picked up earlier. There are no easy answers though, I know.
