13 month old with terrible nappy rash - any advice?

hi,

My 13 month old DS has never suffered with nappy rash up til a fortnight ago. His bottom started getting sore and I thought it was teething but after 2 weeks it is now so bad that tonight it bled I have tried bepanthen, sudocream and even a little talc (I know it is not currently advised but I am desperate)

Has anyone got any wonder cures? I am changing him frequently (even back to when he wakes up at night, which is only once now) and I know he is changed regularly at nursery too.

Help!

I've found metanium to be by far the best nappy cream out there, have tried most of them on ds! You only need a tiny bit, spread thinly. Also a bit of nappy free time is great if possible.

Metanium is really good - sorted my ds out.

If it's bleeding or weeping though, there's nothing better than a bit of fresh air to it.

I turn ds's mattress over so it's waterproof side up, then use a large beach towel as a sheet, and put him down for a nap with a bare bottom. It works wonders, as no creams will stick to a bleeding / weepy bottom.

Once it's dried out a bit, Metanium should do the trick.

Good Luck - HTH

Great minds Weasel!!

ImBarryScott · 09/12/2007 19:27

Could it be fungal?

DD had a rash that was going nowhere with metanium, and canesten cleared it up a treat.

lulalullabye · 09/12/2007 19:27

my dd when newborn got a really bad nappy rash with two areas the size of 5p pieces. I tried everything and the only thing that worked was a dry bottom and a very thin layer of vaseline. She now has a very spotty botty and vaseleine not doing it this time !

amytheearwaxbanisher · 09/12/2007 19:37

i know its hard but if you leave him nappy free for as long as possible during the day the air will dry up and get rid of the rash, blast the heating on and have mop and bucket ready

lulalullabye · 09/12/2007 19:39

imbarryscott, was it spotty as opposed to a general red rash. My dd's is just very raised red sore spots.

hotbot · 09/12/2007 19:43

burts busy bees diaper cream, is expensive, but amazing, better than vaewline, sudacrem etc and i tried most of them, cheapest ive seen it is from slapiton. co.uk, and its free delivery, takes the redness right out.
you feel so sorry for them dont you, its auful, and also as others said, loads of fresh air.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 09/12/2007 19:57

Absolutely coat him in zinc and castor oil cream, not just a little bit, I mean really thick. No nappies as much as possible. Only cotton wool and water to wash.
Have you tried changing nappies?? I know the only ones DD could use when her nappy rash was bad were sainsburys own, I tried tons of different sorts.

ScottishMummy · 09/12/2007 20:06

Metanium bu watch out it stains everything so old sheets.
cannestan if it is fungal - avail acros couter the nappy rash variety
Oh and no talc
as much nappy free time as poss
clean with cotton wool and water

needmorecoffee · 09/12/2007 20:06

might be thrush as well as nappy rash. We used rescue rememdy cream (not easy to get hold of on a sunday night! Lots of nappy off time.
Something change in his diet?

ImBarryScott · 09/12/2007 20:23

lula - yup, my DD's was spotty too.

You could check with your pharmacist - ours gave DH a grilling over spots, redness etc before proclaiming it was probably fungal.

lulalullabye · 10/12/2007 19:47

thanks. Spots are now starting to clear, but if they don't vanish I will visit chemist.

CrushWithEyeliner · 10/12/2007 19:52

metanium and no nappy in a warm room - magic stuff then see your GP sounds fungal

undertheMRSEI25toe · 10/12/2007 19:56

my various elderly relatives swear by egg whites (separated from the yolk!! btw) spread over rash and left to the open air!! aparrantly it dries the weepyness up and sorts out any fungal kinda problem!! i tried it on my DD and it really does work!! i left it for about 3 hours and then washed it off with cotton wool and warm water and the rash was much better by then!! a bit euch but it works!!lol

The nappy lady offers advice about nappy rash herewww.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=49. Some will apply to both cotton and dispies - whichever you use.
And there's something here [[http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=46] about honey and nappy rash under Wash 2. No idea if it works, but might be worth a try.....

ArrietyClock · 10/12/2007 19:58

Argh! Missed a bracket. Try

Try putting a lose sheet over when nappyless, sometimes they don't like feeling so free.
