blue lips

DD2 (2.5) has had blue lips maybe three times over the last few days. She has had no other symptoms, has been totally happy, her temperature has been normal, but the blueness has been very pronounced. She has had a bad cough recently but it does seem to have gone now. I have just looked at NHS direct. It didn't say anything about blue lips with no other symptoms. It did, however, say that if a child has blue lips AND is coughing (which, I stress, dd is not) they are not getting enough oxygen and you should phone 999. As I said DD is not coughing and has seemed very well in every other respect, (and, at this precise moment doesn't even have the blue lips) however, I'm a bit alarmed at this. Should I take her to the docs tomorrow to get her checked? Or does anyone have experience of blue lips as a symptom of something else? She seems so well that I was not remotely worried, it's just reading that it can indicate lack of oxygen has now got me worried

I'd go and see the doctor tomorrow Hatter just to reassure yourself that all is OK. If you are worried you could phone NHS direct or an out-of hours GP, and they can advise you on what to do.

hatter, could she be cold by any chance? my daughter always gets this in the winter - blue fingertips and lips in the morning. she had major heart surgery as a baby so has good expert medical care, and all the hospital consultants have said that as it is just peripheral cyanosis (i.e. the lips but not the tongue are blue) it is harmless and just due to being cold/circulation being a bit sluggish. Our GP likes to overreact and had dd's oxygen levels monitored overnight, they were absolutely fine.
Do take her to see your GP if you are concerned, in the meantime it might be worth googling 'peripheral cyanosis' for some reassurance.

My dd had blue lips when cold and when she had been running around. She got referred to hosp who did ecg and found every thing ok. But she does have slight chest probs, but was not suffering from this when went blue. I would advise to go to the docs and get it checked out, prob nothing to worry abuot though
