Lipoma removal

I've got my date to have my rather larger lipoma removed.
Its around orange/grapefruit size and to the inside of my shoulder blade. It's very noticeable and I'm pretty self conscious of it. Plus its uncomfortable so I'm looking forward to having it done.
Im wondering if anyone who has had similar removed could advise what I should expect.
I've never had any sort of medical procedure, never had local anesthetic etc so I feel very nervous despite it being a very minor thing.

I had one removed from a top of my shoulder under a local anaesthetic years ago, was a size of a large plum. I felt a lot of pulling and squeezing, stitches afterwards, barely visible now.

I was warned some people get more but thankfully I haven't so far.

Thanks for your experience. Was it sore after?

A bit but not majorly.
Mine was right on top of the shoulder so had to be careful not to put my handbag strap over it for months, psychological really. I then used to check whether it was reoccurring, but I soon forgot about it.

U will sail through it Smile

They will numb the area, but you will still feel pulling and pushing. If you feel actual pain though- you need to let them know.

Out of interest, why have you let it get to the size of a grapefruit before getting it removed when it is uncomfortable and noticeable !?!? Confused

Are you getting it done privately or on the NHS?

I have one the size of a tennis ball, but not offered removal on the NHS and quoted £500 to get it removed privately.

I had one removed from my upper arm, it was about the size of a plum. I had loads of tiny injections of local anaesthetic - felt the first few but it worked so quickly that I didn’t feel the last ones. They weren’t painful but slightly uncomfortable.

The doctor then asked if I could feel anything and I panicked a bit as I could, but he explained that I would feel pulling and tugging, but not pain.

I was able to relax and chatted happily to the nurse throughout; I’d guess it took about half an hour. I’ve got a tiny red/silvery line now, nearly 2 years on. I’m so pleased I had it done.

Try to get someone to drive you home if possible, but the recovery was pretty quick. I just didn’t lift things for a few days with that arm.

Good luck, it’ll be so worth it.

I think that’s a good price - mine was well over £1000 for a smaller size.

@hairyfriend because its on my back I don't see it and one day I was having a bath and thought that's actually really uncomfortable so had a proper look and realised how big it had got. And then when I realised how big it was I started getting self conscious.

@dinosaurblues I'm getting it done via NHS.

@gorgeousGoldies thanks for letting me know how got on. Unfortunately there's no one here that can pick me up so I'll have to get a taxi there and back as the hospital is a 30 min drive away. Just hope the taxi driver isn't chatty! My husband can't even come due to covid. The hospital doesn't have anything near it where he could hang around either.

They won’t remove mine. Can I ask how you managed it on the NHS ?

I called and explained I'd had it scanned which confirmed it was a lipoma about 4 years ago but since then it had grown significantly and then when I said how big it was she said she would refer me for general surgery and i got the letter with a date 2 months later. I'm in Scotland, not sure if that makes a difference for things like this?

Mine wasn’t scanned, I just asked if it was a lipoma and she said yes, and to go back if it got bigger.
It has grown a bit, I’d say it’s the size of half an apple.
Mine is next to my spine so I’m not sure if they’d touch it.

purplesequins · 17/10/2021 09:43

I had a small one on my head. the relief was instant, the only uncomfortable bit were the stitches in my hair. was advised not to wash it or get it wet for 3 days. (advice might be different for your area).
procedure as such was fine, as pp I could feel the action but not any pain. was very quick as well, preparation (shaving, numbing injection) took a lot longer than the removal itself.
so far no new lipomas.

good luck!

Id say mine is quite close to my spine as well. It's in between my spine and shoulder blade.

I had one around the size of a grapefruit removed from the base of my spine. It was growing for around 3 years and took a lot of investigative work to make sure it was only a lipoma. It was removed under general anaesthetic on the NHS. The main issue was the stitches which took a few weeks to heal. You’ll be fine, it’s a massive relief once gone 😊
