Pain after filling in tooth

So on Tuesday I had a filling at the dentist in my upper molar, it was a very deep filling. I had no pain before hand but she said even though it was deep it hadn’t reached the nerve. I have been fine since then, I have had some sensitivity in the filled tooth when drinking/ eating cold foods or sugar. My dentist didn’t really tell me how to look after the filled tooth or what to expect just “ any pain come back”. After the filling I had tooth sensitivity which I’ve read can be normal for a couple of weeks and pain around some other teeth and my lower front teeth after the filling which has settled down. She didn’t tell me how to look after my filling so I have been using my electric tooth brush on it, I was using my electric tooth brush last night and when I was on the filled tooth I felt a bit of pain, I was okay after but I woke up during the night and when I bite down my filled tooth was hurting. I’m eating on the other side of my mouth but when I was eating this morning any time my filled tooth touched the tooth below I would get a sharp shock pain in my tooth, and when I touch the filled tooth with my finger it really hurts. The sensitivity seems to have gotten better. I really don’t want root canal so I’m trying to leave it as long as possible to see if it settles, it’s still only day 4 but I was fine until last nights incident when o used my tooth brush, so you think by using the electric toothbrush( even on sensitive mode) that I have aggravated the nerve and the tooth further because it was a very deep filling and already sore and sensitive ? I feel stupid and that I should have left it alone and used a manual brush to gently brush it but she didn’t tell me how to look after the filling so I just assumed it was okay. I’ve been taking paracetamol but it doesn’t seem to be taking the edge of it. It just hurts when I bite down or if I touch the filled tooth directly. What would you suggest? I obviously will leave it a couple of days and see if it gets better before calling the dentist but maybe I have just aggravated an already sensitive tooth by using a strong electric tooth brush on it. Has anyone had deep fillings ? Does the pain settle down and how long should I leave it? My mum has had a deep filling it the past and she said hers hurt for about a week after then it settled down. I had it on Tuesday so I’m on day 4.

did you have a white (tooth coloured) or amalgam (silver) filling ?

Amalgam, she said because it was such a deep filling amalgam would be better durability because it’s stronger ( plus you can’t see it with it being at the back of top teeth)

I had something similar once after a white filling and went back to the dentist, they found a small pocket of air where it hadn’t been filled properly, it may be worth speaking to your dentist again

I would give it a week, deep fillings can take a while to settle

Monitor the pain, take pain killers if you feel the need and review on Tuesday

I had this a few times with fillings in the past. Mostly they settled down.

However, there was one large, deep amalgam filling which had to be replaced with a white filling after a couple of months of ongoing discomfort. My dentist at the time said that having such a large metallic filling so close to the nerve was probably conducting too much heat/cold. Changing the filling material seemed to do the trick. (Sadly, that tooth later fell victim to a caramelised nut and ended up being RCTd and crowned but I did get several years out of the replacement filling without sensitivity.)
