Can a cold/covid cause toothache in lower teeth?

Currently dosed with the cold that seems to be doing the rounds. Tested negative on lft but will be getting pcr tomorrow just to be sure it's not covid. Very typical head cold symptoms sore throat, runny/blocked nose, muscle aches etc. Woke up with jaw pain today which is nothing unusual as I've tmjd, however I have been getting pain in a lower premolar. It's an achy pain, the tooth feels quite bruised which is tender to touch. Dont think I hurt it by clenching as I wear a mouthguard that prevents my molars/premolars from touching. So just wondering if sinus issues/a cold can cause toothache in the lower teeth? I know its common in the maxillary teeth but never really heard of it affecting the bottom. When my tmjd plays up, it tends to be the actual molars (as opposed to premolars) that hurt so dont think it's from that either. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Yes I've had this, I had all your symptoms, LFT was negative, PCR positive.
Just about everything aches at some time or another

I have a really bad cold. Lower jaw and teeth aching. But it is just a cold, LFTs and PCR tests all negative.

SallySkelington · 15/10/2021 19:19

I had that! Thought I was going mad but god, it was so uncomfortable!

TheBlueBear89 · 15/10/2021 19:39

It is one hell of a cold! It honestly feels so flu like. I had general toothache type pain earlier, so just put that down to being stuffed up, but it's really localised to that pre molar now. Did anyone else have localised toothache as opposed to general "teethache"?

I have a banger right mow. I slept for hours this afternoon and when I woke up my top incisor was hurting. I was having dreams about my teeth falling out!

I’m sure it’s all related to sinuses.

BungleandGeorge · 15/10/2021 19:48

Sinus pain can feel like toothache. When you say it’s sore to touch do you mean when you push down on it there’s a sharp pain? I’d say that sounds more like a tooth problem like an abscess. How bad is the pain?

scrivette · 15/10/2021 19:51

When I had toothache in one tooth and saw the dentist he couldn't find anything wrong. He did say that sometimes a heavy cold can cause toothache.

TheBlueBear89 · 15/10/2021 19:52

Ah thats the worst kind of dream @IfImLyingImDying! Fingers crossed you feel better soon. No it's more of an achy pain as if the tooth/ligament is bruised. It's the kind of "toothache" I get when my molars play up but it's also a bit sore when it's not being interfered with. It's just unusual as it's one of the few teeth that don't normally get sore. It's not a terrible pain, but definitely not pleasant either.

@scrivette was it a top or lower tooth?

Your sinuses are in your cheeks so only can cause a feeling off upper tooth pain when inflamed and normally it feels like they all hurt. A localised pain in a lower premolar is probably a flare up of a chronic (grumbling) abscess due to your immunity being low because of your cold. I'd get it looked at and x rayed next week

TheBlueBear89 · 15/10/2021 20:00

Thanks for the advice @kwaziseyepatch! I take it you're a dentist/had similar issue before yourself? You sound very knowledgeable

Yeah it can. Referred pain is quite common when sinuses are involved. Or you might have a bit of food trapped, I get that sometimes. A brutal flossing usually sorts it.

Sounds similar to what I’m feeling right now. Not like a pain, like a uncomfortable ache and pressure. It’s also very sensitive. I do grind my teeth so I could’ve been doing that in my sleep but I’m sure I’ve had this before when I’ve had a cold.

Guilty as charged @TheBlueBear89 Grin
Hope you feel better soon

I tested positive on a lateral flow on Thursday when my only symptom was a headache. Since then I’ve had raging sinus pain in my face, cheeks, upper and lower teeth, jaw and all across my head. Positive pcr came back this morning. Husband also has covid but completely different symptoms.

TheBlueBear89 · 16/10/2021 17:55

Oh you poor thing @Paddingtonthebear, that sounds miserable. Hope you start to feel better soon. My symptoms have eased slightly today after an awful day yesterday so fingers crossed you will recover quickly too. I think mine is a cold as opposed to covid though. I found taking neurofen for "colds and flus" helped me quite a bit. Try and drink lots of fluids too if you can. I had to force water/orange juice down yesterday but do think it eased some of the congestion CakeFlowers
