thursday I woke up with what felt like a bump and a pain on my gums, I checked and there was this spot near the tooth, since Thursday it’s been constant niggle pain with this gum and eating is a bit sore and tooth feels weak? I seen my dentist who is only doing emergency. She said it looks like a gum abcess. She flossed my teeth and gave me mouthwash a special kind (corsodyl?) I’ve not been given anything else. Should this clear it? :( gums feel annoyed too xx

Yes, it should clear in a few days.

You can also gargle with very salty tepid water, not at the same time obviously.

Be gentle with your toothbrush

Thank you Kirsten, have you experienced or are you a dentist? It’s awful having this pain. Appreciate you responding!

DH had a recurring abcess on his tooth. He swore by salt water as warm as you can stand and swilled around the affected area as a cure. This was endorsed by his dentist. He very rarely needed antibiotics.

mynameiscalypso · 15/10/2021 19:23

I was told mouthwash and salt water by my dentist.

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2021 19:29

Experience. I'm all for treating ailments as simply as possible and warm salty water is the biz for sore gums and throats. Cheap as chips and very effective.

You can gargle with soluble aspirin in warm water if it is painful. Spit it out because you don't want to be taking lots of aspirin. It should ease the inflammation and soothe

I'd guess that it could be stress or nutrition related, so make sure your diet is healthy

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 15/10/2021 19:37

It's probably just below the gumline which means antibiotics aren't always necessary. Usually it's just caused by a bit of trapped food that causes a little pocket of infection. Just floss after every meal, brush gently morning and night and use Corsadyl as directed. It tastes a bit rank but does the job. Eat on the other side where possible. It should clear up pretty quickly.

FartyLabrador · 15/10/2021 19:38

Corsodyl is recommended for gum inflammation as it contains a mild antibiotic. Use as the dentist directed and keep the area clean. Use floss or interdental brushes (teepee brushes are a favourite of hygienists). And do make sure you’re eating a healthy diet, plenty of vitamin C.

Have you had before or do you work in dental? I’ll definitely do the above @nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut

I alternated the dentist-prescribed Corsodyl with salty water as hot as I could bear, as often as I could. Microwaveable bean bag thingy held against my jaw helped too.

Mrsmorton · 15/10/2021 20:23

There's a fair amount of plaque between the teeth we can see in your photo OP. Do you clean between them usually yourself?

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2021 20:25

The corsodyl is antiseptic not antibiotic. The active ingredient is clorhexidine and you can use any clorhexidine mouthwash.

SpeakingFranglais · 15/10/2021 20:28

I wouldn’t recommend corsodyl, it made DDs teeth horribly discoloured and brown. She had to visit the dentist to get it cleaned off.

My teeth are in such a bad state unfortunately. Years of Autism, Depression so avoiding due to sensory and motivation to drinking fizzy juice then erosion damage. I’m now cleaning like mad but unfortunately don’t like flossing cause of the sensatiion @Mrsmorton

Oh I’ll give this a go! Had salt water when I had a sore throat and it seemed to do trick :) @powershowerforanhour

@KirstenBlest thank god, hate antibiotics due to thrush in past from them!

You can try a waterflosser if you don't like the sensation of conventional floss.

Pp is right, corsodyl can cause staining if used for prolonged periods. Generally we tell people to use it for 3-5 days and then stop because of the staining. Saying that the stains will be easily cleaned off by your dentist and aren't a big problem really.

@NeverHomeAlone Oh a water flosser, never thought of one of those. I wonder how easy it would be to use - sounds daft but have TMJ and sensory issues but definitely like sound! I think on prescription I’ve to use for 5/7 days! Hope it doesn’t stain :((

Had infections many times. My teeth are quite crowded and difficult to get access to floss so it comes up often. I probably should have had braces as a child.

Joanna65 · 24/05/2022 21:32

Hi I was diagnosed by my dentist I’ve an infection in my tooth. SO Painful but was given amoxicillin which is starting to work but wonder if corsodyl can help
