anti depressants and sleeping pills

the gp has prescribed me zopiclone to help me sleep, and mitazapine for an ad

the sleeping pill i have had for a couple of nights in a row to help me sleep and felt fine the next morning, and def able to drive, but last night (9pm) i started the ad as well, and i still feel like im in some kind of half trance, and i def wouldnt be able to drive like this, which of course i need to do

i'm not planning on using the sleeping pill tonight, as he said only use it a few days a week, but is it the combination of the zop and the mirt that has made me feel so out of it, or is the mirtazapine known to do this?

i have been v sensistive to ad's in the past, but in a different way, so not really sure if i should risk taking another one if i am not able to drive tomorrow iyswim

does any of that make sense?

mirtazapine is really sedating for the first couple of weeks, heavily so, until you adjust to it - so you might not need the zopiclone at all, and definitely take the zispin at night well ahead of bed time so you are reasonably alert the next day

i took it at 9pm, and i couldnt get out of bed til 2.30 this afternoon

i told the gp i need to be able to get up and drive for school runs

now i am scared to take it tonight

I had the same problems with it, after a couple of weeks (argh that sounds like ages to me now) I got used to it although ultimately I had to switch to something else before getting to a therapeutic amount, do you think your GP will understand how extreme the drowsiness is and what a problem it causes and consider changing it to something else?

it's not like taking 2 or 3 weeks off work is it, while your body adjusts to it, school runs are not optional - is there anyone at all who could take the children each morning, or could you take it ridiculously early, say 5 or 6pm - or perhaps wait until the end of term and start it then?

can't really think of anything else that might help, it won't make you that drowsy forever but as for how you function until that wears off I'm stuck!

i could try taking it now and see what happens without the sleeping pill, but i am buggered if not able to drive int he morning

there is noone , who could take htem last min, no

maybe i should wait until next fri to take one again without the sleeping pill, and try to get the timing right for the next day

I really sympathise, I've had a big change in medication recently and a huge increase in demands that involve driving an extra 80+ miles each day - it probably doesn't sound much to most people but every week my quetiapine (also pretty sedating) is increased so I just get over one drowsiness hurdle and then there is another, worse one. I don't want to skip too many doses because when I've been ill before I've been hospitalised, but some days I can barely function and there's nobody to delegate any of it to. cue: violins but it's a seriously delicate balance between short-term functioning and long term wellness.

I'd talk to the GP about it, they might have some ideas - or because it's such early days a change might be the right thing, if you absolutely can't give it that couple of weeks. Are you on 7.5mg zopiclone? it's roughly 4 hours sleep for each 7.5mg I think so any hangover is probably the zispin.

lou33 · 09/12/2007 17:10

i'm on 3.75mg zopiclone so it must be the ad then

god i knew i shouldnt have tried it, they always affect me badly, in some way, even taking one pill

but i just felt like i had to go and ask for help this time

bugger, the gp is on holiday now

most of them have some sort of early side effects, some just more bearable than others but most wearing off after a while - the only way to find out if it's worth persevering with is to, well, persevere I suppose. I think it's really cruel that the actual antidepressant effects can take up to 6 weeks to appear, because when your mood is very low it's almost impossible to do anything to help yourself

your idea about possibly leaving it until friday sounds good, or just take the zopiclone until then as you've discovered this helps you sleep without making you feel worse. hope you find a way around it, good luck

lou33 · 09/12/2007 17:30

thank you

he told me not to take the zopiclone more than 3x a week as i would get too used to them,. but im thinking its better than feeling like i have today, i'm only just feeling slightly with it, i certainly wouldnt drive yet
