Heavy bleeding a week after period (health anxiety)

Hi

Posting because I have health anxiety and this is really causing me to panic.

My period ended about 3 (or 4?) days ago. Just fine to the toilet and I have quite heavy bleeding again - not spotting. This has never happened to me before and I’m totally freaking out and catastrophising.

I’m 44 so I guess it could be peri menopause - but everything I read says spotting. I also had a fibroid diagnosed in May and now worrying it’s actually something more sinister - I don’t know if fibroids can cause heavy bleeding like this?

It was peri-menopause for me. Exactly the same thing, which I had never had before. Literally overnight, my periods went insane.

Thanks for replying - perhaps it is that then. Although not something I’m looking forwards too.

I think because it’s so heavy and I’ve never had this before it really freaked me out - and then of course start thinking the worst etc…

I totally understand your worry. I felt exactly the same. My periods had always been very regular and light. When I turned 41, they went crazy. Weeks of bleeding, flooding, no period from 3 months and then a nightmare of a period. And on it would go. Thankfully, HRT sorted me right out.

Thanks ( although sorry you had that!). Will try and get an appointment with my GP

I am a few years old and I have got bleeding inbetween periods for about 10 years now. I have had 2 investigations to check for uterine cancer via gynaecology referrals but both all clear and its fibroids. I would say its highly likely its fibroids or periods going haywire as menopause approaches but worth checking with GP. Also worth ensuring your smears are up to date, again extremely unlikely.

I could have just written this myself.
No period for months, now on another extremely heavy period after just finishing one last week. I am the same age as you and I have gone from no period for 2/3 months to twice a month instead. Always good to ask if something is bothering you with the GP than let it keep you up at night though.

Thank you everyone for replying. The bleeding seems to be stopping, which I don’t know if is actually more worrying!

I did see a gynae and have an ultrasound and examination plus smear etc in May which was where the fibroid was identified ( it was picked up on a different ultrasound for something unconnected!). So
I think I might just contact the gynae again.

And thank you again for replying! Things always seem worse in the night ( particular with anxiety, plus I’m a single mum so no one to talk to to be rational!)

I have health anxiety too, I hear you. Also a single mum. If everything was fine in May then it's unlikely to be sinister. Contact the gynae again as you said - put your mind at rest.

Thank you @Sapphire387

When I was perlmenopausal periods started regularly stopping for two days then resuming again.

Beakerandbungle · 16/10/2021 19:32

Thanks sadie9. That was what it was like - like my period stopped for 3 days and started. Interestingly is commented to my friend the other day how I hadn’t had to take pain killers for the period this time which is unusual ( and TMI but no clots).

I spoke to my GP who was very disinterested and said it would have to happen over a few months before any tests or anything. So I guess that’s sort of reassuring if a bit depressing as an approach to women’s health!

Am still going to speak to my gynae I think and get the fibroids checked out.
