Ganglion cyst on inside of my left wrist

Namechangeapologies · 14/10/2021 13:22

i have two pretty large ganglion cysts on the inside of my left wrist.
I have shown them to both my GP and a consultant at a hospital i was a patient at (not at the hospital to be treated for the ganglion cyst - was being treated for something else).
Neither GP nor consultant suggested anything after just asking me whether it hurts (answer - a bit).

I do a lot of typing for my work - i am on my laptop all day everything but this has been the case for the last 12 or more years and the cysts are quite new.
Can anyone who has had ganglion cysts suggest any ways to get rid? thanks in anticipation

Apparently aspercreme has a 25% success rate, if massaged in twice daily

Namechangeapologies · 14/10/2021 16:53

Taoneusa thanks I will google that

Actually that’s an American product and I’m not sure of the European / uk equivalent.

The active ingredient is 10% trolamine salicylate.

I had a donut wrist support when I had mine, it made the world of difference. So simple wristdonut.com/

My went eventually on its own but it took months/years

Bells3032 · 14/10/2021 21:29

@namechangeapologies I just got the basic boots own brand one. Don't need it to be fancy. Any drug store will have them

@Namechangeapologies

My friend had one and went privately to have it drained but it filled again so she went back and it seems to do this every 5-6 months or so and so not an ultimate solution and costs her money every time she goes

I have one on my foot. I’ve had it for ages but was in denial, then when the weather changed and I started having to wear proper shoes it started to throb. I took a photo and emailed my surgery. They saw me as apparently they always want to see lumps in face to face appointments. She confirmed it’s a ganglion cyst and said they never remove them. Unlike sebaceous cysts which can get infected.

Taoneusa · 16/10/2021 21:00

I wonder if it is actually difficult to drain it yourself.

I had one come up, out of nowhere last Sunday.

It's really, really bothered me all week. Exact same place as yours.

Me and my sister got drunk last night and she whacked with a book (I know, I know). Completely gone now!

Namechangeapologies · 19/10/2021 16:22

June
When she wacked it with a book did it hurt? What did it feel like?

I am tempted (mine are still there as annoying as ever, I have bought one of those wrap around wrist protectors which i think helps but only in a psychological way.

My sister had one on her wrist. I whacked it really hard with a dictionary (no bible!) and it did get rid of it. It also hurt quite a bit, so I wouldn’t recommend this method.

@FleasInMyKnees

Dont hit it with a book, people used to do this with ganglion on the back of their hands, its inside of your wrist near arteries and veins.
And still don't do it there unless you like having a wrist/hand that has essentially exploded.

The NHS will remove them if they are painful.

In the meantime, ice can help, as do compression gloves (not in terms of making them go down, just in supporting a sore wrist and ensuring you keep your hands straight rather than bent at the wrist when typing) or a splint.

Sometimes they will 'pop' and go back down again, then either never come back, or return at random intervals over the next 30-odd years.

I had one ruptured at 17, the same one excised 4 months later (another reason not to bother with rupturing them, they just come back) and one reappeared in exactly the same place aged 32, 39 and most recently, from 46-47, when it popped as I was lifting an Olympic bar. The last one was the most uncomfortable since the initial one, but it never got bad enough to ask to be referred to Hand Surgery before it popped.

JuneOsborne · 19/10/2021 17:36

It hurt a bit (prosecco helped it hurt less, I'm sure) but it was already really really bothering me. I am sure you're absolutely not supposed to do it, but I would do it again in a heartbeat of it comes back! Still lump free!

Bells3032 · 20/10/2021 05:05

You don't just had a compression sleeve. You put a rubber on top on the cyst to put extra pressure on it. It takes a while (at least a few days) but it does work

RDH19 · 06/02/2022 11:05

Hi, wondering if anyone can help. I noticed this little lump come up in my wrist a couple of weeks ago. I have seen a nurse for another reason and she did have a look and said ganglion and my colleagues also mentioned it. I never heard of one before. I am only 30 years old.

I’m sure it defonhad got bigger.
It’s feels a bit squishy but hard at the same time.
I suffer with health anxiety and it’s panicking me. I’m also pregnant too.

As you can see in the photo when I flex my wrist it shows more.

blahblahx · 06/02/2022 11:15

I currently have one that has decided to come back with vengeance!

Went to the doctors about it a few years ago and I was just told to "whack it with a bible" 😒 wasn't sure whether he was joking or not but apparently it works for some people, however, I'm worried that if I shatter the cyst who knows what else I'll shatter in there because it's in such an awkward position anyway!

My dad had one removed, I guess you need to keep pestering them and explain how it disrupts your daily activities like he did.

RDH19 · 06/02/2022 11:32

Do you think this looks like one? X

blahblahx · 07/02/2022 16:21

@RDH19

Do you think this looks like one? X
It's hard to tell by the angle but it does look slightly raised like a ganglion would be.

I would get it looked at to be sure, definitely!

RDH19 · 08/02/2022 09:42

This may be a better photo.

You can see the area is lighter too almost like does that mean liquid. Looks white.

Yeh I have a scan 19th March: but I have really bad health anxiety and worried sick and just want some reassurance and advice x

RDH
That is exactly what mine looked like.
Happy to say they went on their own. I suspect they were caused by repetitive strain but when I unintentionally knocked them on a hard surface (it was an accident) I think that helped them go down. It did hurt when I knocked them tho!

GettingStuffed · 28/03/2022 15:11

I've got one on my right wrist, when it gets big it hurts as it presses on a nerve but GO said it was too dangerous to try because it was too close too blood vessels, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the swelling
