Developing an intolerance to alcohol

Hungry675tf · 13/10/2021 20:46

I've a few known allergies (penicillin, tree pollen and hair dye) so am relatively used to the flushed, tingling sensation of coming into contact with an allergen.

The problem im having of late is that I seem to be getting hay fever symptoms now in the autumn. I've also started to get the flushed sensation/tingling tongue when I drink red wine and dark beer. Is this a thing??? I notice it quite quickly and so stop, but then days/weeks later I forget and the same thing happened.

It happened last year when I had covid, couldn't touch red wine for ages. I saw my GP about my long covid symptoms and included the intolerance and they shut it down very quickly.

Has anyone had similar happen to them? Not really sure how to proceed except with caution and piriton.

Yes I developed an intolerance to alcohol shortly after developing ME CFS. I suddenly kept having allergic reaction to alcohol I’ve now been teetotal for 2.5yrs (granted I’m pregnant with number 2 now but still) and don’t miss it because it was making me so ill every time I had a sip. Sorry it’s prob not what you want to hear!

WhenShallIShare · 13/10/2021 21:44

Oh and my ME CFS developed after a period of post-viral complications

Hungry675tf · 13/10/2021 21:45

@WhenShallIShare thanks for sharing, can I ask have you developed any other allergies/intolerances? I'm worried about where it will end!

I don't know how old you are but my MIL has developed some allergies as part of the menopause. She has researched it and tells me its a common side effect.

WhenShallIShare · 13/10/2021 21:51

No @Hungry675tf luckily alcohol was the only new intolerance I had, although saying that, other allergies started becoming worse/more sensitive and requiring diff antihistamines particularly for skin problems which were allergy related

Hungry675tf · 13/10/2021 21:52

37, but at high risk of early menopause as its normal to go through it in 30's in my family.

I had wondered about meno.

@WhenShallIShare thank you, that makes sense as my other ones are getting worse, particularly the hair dye one. I've stopped using it now.

Yup me too - though not straight away. - sometimes a few hours later. Terrible hives come up all over my face. I'm a bit older so might be in peri. Mine is with white wine though. Strangest thing

Effic · 13/10/2021 21:59

Develop allergies as part of the joy of menopause. I developed eczema on my eyelids out of absolutely no where having never been allergic to anything in my life and have to take antihistamine and use steroid cream. Red wine (my fav) now absolutely out of bounds and now finding certain spirits (whiskey) a no too.
GP just shrugged

rubyredring · 13/10/2021 22:00

My husband is in his 50's and has developed multiple allergies in the last few years (dairy, gluten, corn/maize among other things). He's ok with alcohol unless it has sulphites in it. Could it be sulphites that are causing your reaction maybe?

Hungry675tf · 13/10/2021 22:02

Biology is so unfair to us sometimes. Thank you for sharing your stories, I might go back to the GP about the meno.

I just want a beer 😭

I've found I started reacting to wine and beer but am fine with gin and vodka. I've heard it can be histamines that cause the problem.

Hungry675tf · 13/10/2021 22:09

@Hullbilly I think this may be it, as I can hammer it on the cocktails and be fine, but half a beer is a no-no.

@rubyredring thanks for the tip have just had a look at the ingredients and no sulphites were listed. I'll keep an eye on this though.

I wonder of its that I've had a virus recently and so my liver is reacting weirdly to the histamine. This may explain why it was bad post covid but then seemed to recover for a period 🤔

Biology isn't my string point though so welcome anyone who can put me right.

There are histamines in red wine. Sometimes my sinuses get a bit swollen when I drink it.

TaraR2020 · 13/10/2021 22:13

I started getting intense mild allergic reactions to all sorts last winter, GP suggested vit d deficiency because it effects immunity. Turns out I was deficiencient and taking high dose supplements made a big difference!

We've all been locked inside for nearly 2 years, we're probably all more deficient than usual!

Cyw2018 · 13/10/2021 22:14

I get a flare up of eczema on my hands overnight after drinking wine. I rarely drink alcohol anymore but when I was a more regular drinker I'd cover my hands in hydrocortisone cream before going to bed if I'd had any wine.

Hungry675tf · 13/10/2021 22:20

@TaraR2020 interesting you say that, I have been highly deficient in vit D pre covid and was on a high strength dose. I've not taken any in months 😬 that would be an easy win!

OP posts:
Hullbilly · 13/10/2021 23:22

I might try the vitamin d too.

TaraR2020 · 13/10/2021 23:34

Hope it helps :)
