Fish oil supplements for adults: question

Xanthipi · 09/12/2007 10:29

Do they have similar effects on the adult brain that, say, Eye-Q or equivalent have for children?

I ask because I bought some generic fish oils from Boots, but all it says on the label is that it's "good for the heart and circulatory system", nothing about effect on the brain.

(I'm interested in taking fish oils becuse I'd heard once they could be effective for certain mood disorders eg bipolar.)

I guess I want to know is should I be taking a supplement that contains fish oils PLUS SOMETHING ELSE to be more effective on the brain. I gather, for example, that Eye-Q is not pure fish oil, but has other stuff in it. Thanks.

There is more & more research showing mood stabilising effect.
But when it comes to supplement quality does matter and the cheaper generic brands do not have optimum formulation.
You also have to remember that fish oils can be loaded with mercury so quality does matter here too.
I'm not in the UK so don't really know brands. Go to a health shop and ask.
One of the best products on the market is called Udo's oils and combines omega's 3-6-9. It's mainly plant extract.

If I remember correctly Holland and Barret do a good product combining starflower/evening primrose/lineseed oils to a high concentration. I used to buy it for my skin (omegas excellent to combat dry skin pblms like psoriasis and eczema).
These plant combinations have been used for years to alleviate PMS & pre menaupose "tension"
