Ds (3) vomiting for 24 hours and keeping *nothing* (including water) down

Ds (3) has never had a tummy bug as such. He's eaten something that disagrees with him, thrown the day's food up and been fine afterwards. But he started vomiting last night, bringing up dinner, then his milk, and then all the little sips of water he'd taken through the night, about every half-hour or so. He wants to eat and drink, but even when restricted to plain toast and water, it's all coming up. This is new to me, the bringing-up-water thing, and for it to be going on for almost 24 hours. I'm primarily concerned about him becoming dehydrated. Any thoughts? Thanks.

If I were you I'd not give him anything for 6hrs then try with water first if still coming up then call a Dr.

Twoddle, how awful for your DS.

This happened to my friend's DD, she was advised by NHS Direct to give water literally one teaspoon at a time, ie one teaspoon, wait ten minutes, another teaspoon, and repeat again and again. If breath smells like pear drops (remember those)then seek medical advice as this is a sign of real dehydration, can't remember why, sorry.

take him off milk dairy products upset an already upset tummy and will make him sick, boiled seven up dioralite and water will keep him well hydrated little sips would be best and if he keeps that down for a good while try a biscuit something dry and bland like half a rich tea every two to three hours or so he wont starve and the hydration is more important

If water won't stay down call a doctor as it's usually a sign of something pretty serious and dehydration can set in quickly. Any idea what he's eaten to trigger this? Because it could be salmonella if he's had anything (eggs, meat, fish) that no one else in the household ate.

Smell of ketones isn't necessarily a sign of dehydration my little one smells of this constantly and has been seen by a doctor. Aparently it is a sign of starvation though as it is a by product of when the body is metabolising fat a certain way (similar to the atkins diet), so long as your child is still urinating freqently then there is no need to panic.
A spoonful of water is a good idea and if they can keep it down then great but sometimes after severe vomiting the stomach automatically goes into vomiting mode as soon as anything reaches it and sometimes needs a little break to stop this cycle. If you are really worried then take lo to a and e they are always happy to see children even if the problem turns out to be relatively minor.

There is a pretty bad vomiting thing going round - mine have had it and I had it too so know what it was like . But it did only last 24 hours for the bad phase where I couldnt keep anything down (and similar for my DS and DD). I felt not that good for a few more days after but was able to keep liquids down - just lost my appetite. Had the runs too .
If he is still unable to keep any liquids down tomorrow I would get him checked out.

If it is the same bug, watch out - its pretty contagious (sp?).

Hope he's better soon.

Twoddle - it sounds like a stomach bug to me, rather than dodgy food, as others have said - particularly if he's "heaving" up even water. DD's had this now a couple of times so I've got into a routine of doing the following which may (or may not) be helpful for you:

no food for 24 hours after first vomiting - (sometimes she heaves for a few hours after which is distressing though)
only sips of water every 15 minutes or so - if that comes up, try drenching a piece of cotton wool and running it over his lips every 10/15 minutes
Careful with giving fizzy drinks - they tended to set DD off again. I gave flat lemonade in very small amounts if she was keeping water down but even then I was careful because sugary drinks are a diuretic which can make them even more susceptible to dehydration.
first food after 24 hours - not toast/crackers which I know is traditional but sticky rice which is just rice over-cooked so it's all claggy and not very appetising! After that, reintroduce very bland foods on a daily basis.
No dairy for at least one week after the day he started vomiting.

I hope that's helpful and that, at any rate, your DS starts to perk up soon. Second the advice about seeing the GP if you're at all concerned. Chin up

DH is diabetic so I know all about keytones...
The smell of keytones signals the body burning fat, people on the atkins diet get it, their aim is to go into keytosis which means they are burning body fat rather than food fuel. This is perfectly normal if he has not eaten anything or kept anything down.

Sorry all, got that bit about ketones wrong
