Waiting times for test results for suspected ovarian cancer

Can anyone tell me if there are targets for telling a patient the results of scan results for suspected ovarian cancer?

Person had a scan within the two weeks from referral from the GP and was told that they would get the results within 7-10 days. It has now been nearly 3 weeks and they claim not to have had the results.

Very sadly I have reason to fear that they may not be telling the truth about not yet having been given the results and was wondering how plausible it may be that they are still waiting.

I can't speak for your specific thing as I don't have experience of that, but I have recently been in hospital for a serious medical issue. I was scanned twice (ultrasound and then a few days later MRI) and with both I had the results back the same day. The MRI I was initially told it would be 7 days as I was technically outpatient but my consultant chased it and got them back within the same day for me.

Ive had to wait 14 days for results but never any longer.
Maybe due to short staffing ?

I had my scan results the same day and the bloodwork took 2 weeks. They were passing me around 2 separate clinics claiming one had the results but they was not allowed to give them and gp was saying the same thing. In the end I actually broke down and cried and begged someone to give my results I was scared and worried and that day a nurse rang back with my results...maybe give them a ring explain that you are very worried and they are taking longer than expected and you want your results and see what they say. Good luck op

I imagine it is dependant on the hospital and how they run their clinic. At our hospital it is a scan then you go straight in to see the consultant for the results but I don't know if that is standard practice. You might be able to find some information in the hospital website about their 2 week wait clinic and what to expect.

Depends on the hospital and referral route.

From a routine scan to resulting should be no longer that 6 weeks though.

Best current standard may be the FDS within 28 days of being referred urgently by their GP for suspected cancer but this is not fully in place as far as I know and may not apply here.

Having said that they will need more than a scan alone for an ovarian cancer diagnosis.

Have they got a CA125 count from a blood test?

Clear clinical symptoms? Etc

Most likely if it was an initial ultrasound scan they will need an contrast dye scan too if other markers suspicious.

Disclaimer: I am not a medic though am an OC survivor and may be out of date.

Sorry! To answer your question they may be having further tests so no definitive diagnoses yet.

Thanks for all the replies. The results apparently came through today and are thankfully negative. I'll keep my concerns about how long the person might actually have been sitting on that information entirely to myself.

To be fair, the NHS has a shortfall of 2000 radiologists; A third of the potential workforce.

That might have something to do with it.
