My 13 year old has mefanemic acid for her periods as a first solution, but the gp was on board for trying the pill if that doesn't sort it.

tiddlysquat · 07/10/2021 17:10

I had this exact same thread a few weeks ago.

Have been prescribed mefanamic acid, will see how it goes . She doesn't want the pill and I and the GP also not keen due to my own history

You can get plug in heat pads. DD has a day off school a month but the heat pad makes things at home a bit more bearable and helps her sleep.

@Rosesareyellow

The combined pill should be taken for 28 days with a 7 day break to allow a breakthrough bleed

This changed a few years ago. It can be taken back to back or three packs at a time with a break if you’re prone to break through spotting.

Correct but most brands still state 28 days with 7 day break Occasional back to back is fine and tri using is common too I work in sexual health contraception and abortion services , we find often when women mess with irregular use it leads to further issues such as unwanted pregnancy So , we recommend a routine cycle of use unless relevant for occasions such as holiday / wedding /etc Always follow the instructions given by your provider The other thing we often confuse is the time window for daily use , again varies greatly 2-12 hrs so check which one is correct for you

If she doesn’t want to take anything hormonal acupuncture costs £50-£60 a session and can regulate, lesson water retention, lessen cramps, stop clots, lighten flow, shorten period length.

Apart from the price it’s a great way to resolve period and hormonal issues. I just wish it was available for period issues on the nhs. It is available up our way for other things but not that. It’s got a good track record and is proven.

My DD went on the pill aged 14 as she was anaemic from periods that were 16 days of bleeding. No weight gain, she never gets spots even though her brother did. She runs three packs together then takes a break.

I suffered, used to faint with the pain. Was told not to take feminax as if made fainting more likely. Was prescribed the acids mentioned by PPs

@Loopyloulou007

If in the UK. Yours child, medically is between the child and Dr, after about 13 I think it was. Don't think you know longer have a say. I am able to ring up and make appointments and attend if she wants, but the Dr will always ask her if she gives permission for me to be in the room, rather than it be a right, as a parent. Why don't you want her on the pill, it balances out the hormones, sorts outs spots (normally) and hopefully would stop the severe cramping and the missing of school. This from someone who cannot take the pill, but I would never rule it out for my child, if it helped her. Why are you against it, if it is beneficial in these circumstances.

Sorry but this is garbage. If you read the post, it's her daughter that's not keen to go on the Pill and a teenager should be allowed to make an informed choice about what happens to her body, and to request to see a GP without a parent in the room if old enough. There's little point in trying to force a medication on her, she just won't take it.

I used to miss school as a teen because of period pains. I wouldn't suggest the pill just for the pains, but I believe schools should make provisions in order to support female students.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2021 19:34

I wouldn’t go on the mini pill if she’s already got acne, progesterone can make it worse than you can imagine and it does make you gain weight.

The combined pill can be better for acne.
