Do kidney stones that aren't passing ever hurt?

I'm quite prone to kidney stones, I've passed some, I've also had lithotripsy for a couple before. The past few months I've had a lot of pain around my right side, I got referred for an ultrasound which the doctor had set up because he thought it might be gallstones, however it turned out to be some very big kidney stones, certainly the biggest I've had before, the doctor now thinks it's that that has been causing the pain. But I didn't know kidney stones caused pain when they wasn't being passed? Anyone have any experience of this?

Yes, I had this. The doctors said the pain in the side is from them shifting and momentarily blocking your urine from being able to come out.
I had to get mine broken up because they weren’t passing.

Oh that makes a lot of sense! Thank you!

I've had kidney stones that passed twice, but the kidney->bladder tube scarring left behind after the insane pain also flares up sometimes now. That gives me about four to eight hours of fairly high pain, much fun Sad

@Alwaysfuckingsick

Can I ask about the pain? I’ve had a kind of hot cramping in my side heading towards my back for the past 48hr. Had it on and off before. Is that what yours feels like?

Mine is almost like someone at sat around inside my ribs with a chisel. BUT it did get hot and crampy when I had infections, I've not had 1 in a couple of years but twice they have been so bad I've had to be in hospital for 3 nights and 5 nights. I would get it checked OP, hope it gets better soon
