Breast clinic appointment

After 6 long weeks of waiting I’ve finally got my appointment at the breast clinic this Wednesday. I had the call today with the date and because it’s been so long I have managed to put it at the back of my mind. Now it’s all rushed to the surface again and I’m feeling horribly anxious.

I have 2 areas of concern according to my GP that will be checked, a small pea sized lump and some thickening in my left breast. Just looking for a little bit of a hand hold. Im 34, 3 little ones and not really sure what to expect on the day Sad

If it's like my local clinic then it's a one stop shop and runs a little like this

  1. you'll be called in to see one of the clinical team who will examine your breasts (big tip - wear a top that is easy to take off and get a front fastening bra) and take a medical history from you. Once they've examined your breasts they may decide they don't need to do anything further and you'll be sent on your way. If they decide you need some more tests then you'll go back to the waiting room.
  2. ultrasound time. As you're under 40, it's most likely to be an ultrasound rather than a mammogram. They may also take a biopsy while you are having your ultrasound (top tip - take baby wipes as the gel is sticky and the blue paper they give you is rubbish for taking it off). Once you've had your ultrasound you will go back to the waiting room.
  3. back in to see one of the clinical team to discuss your ultrasound and decide on next steps. If your ultrasound is clear then you'll be discharged. If they need to do further checks, you'll be given a return date and told exactly what they are going to do and why.

They are absolute professionals and I know it's really scary to have to go there but they really are the best people to have in your corner. I've been under the care of my local team for 3 years (they joke that I have frequent flyer miles now) and I couldn't ask for better care than they give. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get them to explain things if you aren't sure.

Best of luck x
