Ouch.....

If it is still uncomfortable and you aren't happy about it, I would go back. Did you get any pain killers?

tiredemma · 07/12/2007 10:36

soft tissue damage will hurt a lot- have you had any ibrufen?

Tatties · 07/12/2007 10:37

Oh that sounds awful, poor you

Are painkillers touching it? Is there a number you can phone for advice? I'd sooner phone than go back in again unnecessarily, but I don't think you should leave it if you are concerned.

oh dear. Codeine?

If you are unhappy about it you should go back- but tissue damage can sometimes hurt more than an actual fracture

castille · 07/12/2007 10:44

Sounds nasty, poor you

Silly question maybe but has it been x-rayed? If not then definitely go back. They could give you some other anti-inflammatory pain killers too.

Ah, that's tough. I'd go back if you're still in lots of pain, if only for some other drugs

With soft tissue injuries, there is a position (at rest) where it doesn't hurt. Yours sounds like a bone damage, possibly a broken bone since you are in so much pain. If so, it is normal that you can barely move your thumb.

An anti-inflammatory would be good to take. Even if you are allergic to ibuprofen, there are others you can take, like Voltaren.

Voltaren is not a painkiller, just an anti-inflammatory medicine. With it, you can only take paracetemol for pain iirc. [I was sceptical about taking paracetemol for my fractured rib some years ago, but 2 grams a day worked very nicely.]

The scaphoid is a bone in your wrist which lies underneath the little dimple at the base of your thumb. nice wikipedia link

Injuring yourself in the way that you did can cause an injury to the scaphoid that usually does not show for 10 days or so. What happens is that the blood supply has been interuppted and the bone will die back a little bit over a few days leaving a hairline fracture visible. If you poke in the dimple and have to be peeled off the ceiling, then you probably have broken it and it isn't showing yet!

They should give you an appointment for a review clinic in 10 days to 2 weeks time from the injury and then re-xray you to see if there are any changes visible.

If you have fractured your scaphoid, it will heal again - it just takes time, 6 to 8 weeks or so. They may keep you in the splint or upgrade it to a cast.

It is a very common injury, but good enough to get you out of peeling the sprouts and washing up this year.

Hope you feel better soon.

I second what vole3 says. If you imagine the posistion you would put your hand in if you held onto a door knob and then twisted the knob. If this movement is very painful, then it is probably your scaphoid bone.

I've done scaphoid twice
Tis sinfully painful,
anti inflamms good if you can get some prescribed as well as something codeine based scaph does not show up easily on xray due to swelling, so they can be lax at diagnosing it.
Sorry for you
