Daughter is at uni and has not been out partying, just usual city stuff.
Could be Freshers thing of course, but is in 2 bed flat so no huge amount of coming and going.
Neg PCR.

She's been coughing like a banshee for a week, I've never heard anything like it.

Has been home for a few days and I'm ready to throw her out.

But seriously just wanted to hear of anyone who has had this.
She feels absolutely fine, no headache, chills, fever but nothing is shifting this.

It's inbetween dry and slightly productive, so treating it isn't straight forward. Done Vicks, mucus cough med, thumping her back etc.

Last night the poor girl (and I mainly mean me 😄) took 2 hours to get to sleep.

I'm not sure what I hope to get from posting but any cough alliances would be reassuring.

Study starts Monday and it's looking unlikely she'll be able to attend the long awaited in person lectures for now.

Random question but is she on blood pressure meds?

Just asking because an uncontrollable cough can be a side-effect of some of them.

thesunwillout · 01/10/2021 14:50

Hi no she's not. Thanks

Hi my 13 year old son has just had similar. He literally could not stop coughing it was awful. All day and night. We kept him off school for a week. He had 2 negative pcr tests. He is still coughing on and off now but back at school. We got him some cough medicine and vicks for his chest and we got him jakemans sweets which did help him stop coughing for a while.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 01/10/2021 14:56

My DD2 has the same cough but a cold as well. Dropping her at university tomorrow in the pouring rain. I’d rather leave her in the sunshine as we’ve done with DD1 today at the same place. Constant negative ltfs, and I know she will want to attend all freshers’ events next week, but I doubt she can if she’s that ill.

Hope your DD feels better soon. X

TheBraveLittleTaylor · 01/10/2021 15:00

Honey and lemon

She’s young and healthy so I’m sure she’ll be better soon. You could ask a pharmacist.

I never knew that! I am prone to bloody awful irritating coughs and I'm on BP meds.
Vargas · 01/10/2021 15:04

I haven't tried it but a friend swears by baby Calpol with a terrible cough. I know, weird, but can't hurt to try?

Vargas · 01/10/2021 15:05

And a steam humidifier in the bedroom at night is a godsend with a cough.

Fubitch · 01/10/2021 15:07

@RaskolnikovsGarret she'll need a pcr for a cough. LFTs are for asymptomatic infection.

bestbefore · 01/10/2021 15:10

Honey, lemon juice, glycerine and brown sugar. Hot water. Drink half a mug every now & again, works wonders!!

waybill · 01/10/2021 15:10

It's not whooping cough is it?

I had it as an adult and it was horrendous.

bangonthedoorgroovychick · 01/10/2021 15:16

We've got this too...(negative tests) 3 weeks now but it got worse this week so we are all on antibiotics now it's bloody horrible.

My 4 year old is just getting over it but my 2 year old is really poorly.

When will it end!? Sad

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 01/10/2021 15:25

Dd had this. The GP prescribed a blue inhaler even though she has never had asthma. She called it a post viral irritation.

It has really helped.

Negative PCR here too. Childhood immunisation against whooping cough too. Although that's probably not 100% effective. Rest of the family have managed to avoid it so far.

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 01/10/2021 15:26

Should have said Dd had the antibiotics too.

hellcatspangle · 01/10/2021 15:32

Pholcodeine linctus at night is the best to suppress a cough.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 01/10/2021 15:50

Thanks I’ll check whether she’s done a pcr. She and her sister are super strict about Covid rules so hopefully she has.

thesunwillout · 01/10/2021 17:10

Hi thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts, it's bloody awful isn't it.

Have the humidifier, was using benylin Mucus cough and it's meant to thin any mucus. There's mucus occasionally but, as with all cough meds it's hard to know if you are taking the right one.
The cough is also dry at the same time so wasn't sure if a suppressent was the best way to go.

I remember it being like this for yrs when she was little.

She did have an inhaler back then, so we have wondered if one would be of any use.

Re antibiotics, again you never know if they are necessary, as also even getting a gp appointment is hard.

I think that if, next week it hasn't improved she'll have to go see a GP in uni town.

Croup, this would also need a GP to check.

Up to this point of a week just been hoping it'll go, as often you're told it's just a virus.

I have this. A phlegm-y cough

32 weeks pregnant and I called Dr and he arranged antibiotics for me. They are working a but bit God it is an annoying one.
My husband has started coughing too.
It's like wheezy as well. Very irritating!

PracticalTacticalBrilliance · 01/10/2021 17:24

I've just had this, I did go to the Doctors last week and got diagnosed with Bronchitis. I was given a 'rescue pack' of antibiotics and steroid tablets as I have bad asthma, but told only to use it if I got worse and was coughing up green/brown mucus - it was yellow at the time which isn't considered bad.

It's finally calmed down about 2 weeks later and I can sleep properly. It was odd as it's definitely a mucus cough but dry and hacking at other times.

Is she trying to sleep propped up? That definitely does help if you can do it. I was also alternating between different Benylin medicines, but yes honey and lemon - even just eating honey directly before bed, helped a bit. Plus lots of Vicks on back and front. Paracetamol for any rib/muscle pain caused by the cough & lots of rest.

StCharlotte · 01/10/2021 17:39

Is she trying to sleep propped up?

It's the only thing working for me.

thesunwillout · 01/10/2021 18:06

Yes sleeping propped up, it's a real git of a cough.

Bit of mucus somewhere but mainly dry. No headache, no lung pain, no stomach muscles pain.

Just spoken to a pharmacist who said honey, lemon, drinks, rest.

Has also emailed personal tutor for advice on attending lessons with a cough.

sadie9 · 01/10/2021 21:26

Pholcodeine if you can get your hands on it. Otherwise normal painkillers might also help suppress the urge to cough.
