Why does my breath stink

Stankbreath · 29/09/2021 07:30

I can literally taste it and it’s making me feel sick at the thought that other people can smell it too!
It smells like poo (I am not the poo troll!)
I brush twice a day, floss every other day,
When I do floss i get the inevitable trapped food at the back by my wisdom teeth but the floss is also smelly at parts of my upper gum near my smaller back teeth.
Please help!

Tonsil stones?
If you don’t fancy having a poke, ask your dentist / hygienist.

Actually your dentist would be a good first port of call. They will be able to discuss any other possible medical reason for bad breath / taste.

If they refer you to your GP, then the GP will expect you to have had a dental check up.

Yes dentist and dental hygienist first. If that doesn’t fix it, you have to look at your diet. A fresh whole food preferably organic diet with little or no processed food and no sugary stuff should fix it. I eat this kind of diet when I’m in control of my food (at home) but notice that when I have to travel and eat non-fresh and processed food, my breath quickly begins to smell. Also ensure you drink enough water (not just tea/coffee).

Also buy a tongue scraper and use it every morning with the first brushing of teeth.

Do you vape?

Pinkywoo · 29/09/2021 08:01

My first thought was tonsil stones, have a little poke with a cotton bud! and then video it for sporners corner

Runforthehillocks · 29/09/2021 08:05

How old are you? Some people are genetically prone to gum disease as they hit their forties and fifties and that has an unpleasant smell. If this is a possibility, speak to your hygienist - they'll be able to arrange a 'deep clean' and suggest other things which will tackle it.

NotMyCat · 29/09/2021 08:21

Agree with tonsil stones

Go to a dentist, my carer's breath smelled of poo, his wisdom teeth were infected and he had to have them out in hospital.

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/09/2021 09:44

You’re not flossing enough?

Try interdental brushes. They really scoop out bits and pieces that turn very smelly.

RedBonnet · 29/09/2021 10:07

my upper teeth have this smell too, never the bottom ones. It's the gums rather than anything else. I was once put off by a so called dental hygienist because her breath smelled like this too. I use the small interdental brushes (te-pe) and this gets rid of the smell. You can carry them with you and use throughout the day.

I am still trying to find out what causes it in the first place - in my case I have a permanent blocked nose from hay fever and my saliva tastes nasty. In the past I have asked GP and dentists but they're not bothered about such minor complaints. In my experience the dentist has a text book answer that they 'always' trot out and rarely look beyond the 'use floss' advice. I honestly believe they think you are lying when you say you floss/brush etc :(

Stankbreath · 29/09/2021 15:38

My diet is healthy, odd bit of chocolate but not everyday.
I drink decaf tea but also drink at least 2L of water a day (most days 3)
Don’t smoke or vape

Will give the interdental brushes a try and poke for tonsil stones.

No chance of seeing the hygienist anytime soon, my dentist aren’t even doing check ups, can only get an emergency appointment if you’re in pain (which is surely counter productive 🙄)

@RedBonnet yes it’s definitely the upper gums (but not at the front)!

It’s really getting me down, quite grateful to be wearing a mask at work!
