9 month old full of a cold, being sick and choking

I have taken her to the docs this morning, and been told its just a viral infection. So I take that to mean a heavy cold? She has rash on back and front, but doc not worried about it. No temp, and chest is clear.

Anyway, she is fine but then starts choking, and 3 times today, I have had to pick her up and tap her back....while thinking..please start breathing again...else I am ringing an ambulance (very scary when on your own too) then she is sick and starts breathing again.

What can i do to help her with her breathing?

Its really starting to scare me.

thanks

oh gosh- no real advice Divvy - TK has been full of a cough and cold this week too - and today and yesterday he's been coughing really violently and sound likes he's going to be sick, going bright red in the face etc etc, but then seems to sort himself out.

Have you tried taking her into the bathroom and putting the shower on (or just running the hot water tap if you don't have a shower) really really hot so there's lots of steam?

Also you could try some Vicks Baby Balsam - that's supposed to work - we've never tried it for the DS's - but instead have used normal Vicks in a pan of boiling water with them in the room nearby.

Hope someone comes along soon with some better adivce.

Divvy · 06/12/2007 13:30

I have been putting vicks on her chest and back....also its not where the rash is, so its not caused the rash.

Its just so scary. A heavy cold and cough I can deal with, but this not nice at all.

Going town later so may look for something else...dont vicks do a vapur machine type thingy?

DS1 used to do this a lot when he was the same age, I think it was because he was so bunged up with mucous that he would choke on it and it woulkd make him vom

As for the rash, I presume you have done the tumbler test and all is well, iof so, babies get all sorts of odd rashes when they are ill.

I second Ice Queen's suggsetions for helping your DD breathe a bit easier. Just keep an eye on her. If you are really worried, go to A&E

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 13:32

I think you should go back to the GP, at least for some peace of mind, you don't want to be worrying about it all night.

TheIceQueen · 06/12/2007 13:33

Don't know - you could go into Boots or Superdrug and ask?

Or that Chemist up off Church Street (Armside I think it's called) has usually been quite helpful too.

TheIceQueen · 06/12/2007 13:39

another little bump

Divvy · 06/12/2007 13:48

She has jsut had a bottle of milk (tahts not going to help with flem) going out now and will see how she is latter, so may take her back to docs if not happy

Hope she's better soon..

and once she is we MUST do that "posh" coffee

itcameuponamidnightclayre · 06/12/2007 13:54

we've been using a sudafed plug in thing n ds room to try and help him breathe and it does help, he is 2 and a half but they are suitable from 3months

mylovelymonster · 06/12/2007 14:16

My 10.5 month has had 2 colds in the last month - panic stations with first one - really nasty & poor things throat really swollen making her cough a lot and preventing her from eating/making her throw up her food plus loads of snot. We tried boiling an open kettle in her room for 5 mins to fill with steam/humidity to help her breathe. Childrens Olbas oil on a tissue on a shelf near but out of reach and Snuffle-babe rub on her chest. Also saline drops in her nose four times a day to loosen the bogies (all found in big Tescos), and we gave her milk - & supplemented with some formula - in a cup to help her get some nutrition inside her. Also, plenty of water - a cup to hand constantly. Keep the room around 18/19 degrees - go easy on the central heating.
We gave her Calpol for 3/4 days while her temp was high & then let her get on with it - took at least 10 days before she was back to herself.
She's got something else today!! Really upset & clingy - low appetite, and not sleeping....either teething or she'll have a fever by tonight......here we go again.........
Good luck! - & go back to your GP if your worried. You can't do much for a viral infection, which are most colds, except make them feel a bit less miserable while their immune system fights it. You just need to watch out for secondary bacterial infections - your GP should tell you what to look out for/be worried about.
Aren't they a worry!

TheIceQueen · 06/12/2007 15:33

Divvy - how is she now??

Divvy · 06/12/2007 17:23

Just took her back to doctors, as wasnt happy, and she is still fine, chest clear, but doc was very nice, and said she will be happy to see her tomorrow again for me, if we need to.

I got some medised, which has decongestant in it, managed to get her to take some just now, so hope it drys her up a bit.

She has only had her milk today, she wont have any food, so wont bother to get her weighed now for a few weeks

She seems a little happier now too.

They are such a big worry!

That's good

meepingaroundthechristmastree · 06/12/2007 17:41

My DD is just coming out of her cold. She also had a rash on her chest/tummy - doc told me this can happen when they have a virus - but total sympathy to you Divvy, it is very scary. The coughing choking isn't nice either - DD would go bright red until she managed to clear the phlegm, poor wee thing. Hugs to your DD!

Divvy · 06/12/2007 17:52

thank you all xx

Sudafed Plug-ins are excellent and so long as you change the pad that slides inside every night it does a great job of clearing airways etc.

mylovelymonster · 06/12/2007 19:27

Divvy - I've been anguishing over DDs weight (9th centile, tut tut) but do you know the health visitors (in my area anyway) have just had new guidelines that weighing just four times in the first year is necessary?
Don't worry about DD losing interest in her food - as long as she's having fluids she'll be fine. Glad to hear GP confident about her and hope she's much better soon.

TheIceQueen · 06/12/2007 20:14

mylovely - don't worry - I know Divvy isn't really worried about her DD's weight - she's just jealous that I have a monster - 3 months younger than her DD - and several pounds heavier. Her DD is beautifully in proportion - unlike my DS3 who's a giant (that's why she put a at the end LOL).

TheIceQueen · 07/12/2007 10:13

Divvy - how is she today??

Divvy · 07/12/2007 15:00

meepingaroundthechristmastree · 07/12/2007 16:23

Hugs to your DD Divvy - poor wee thing and poor you. Hope the doc has helped - keep us updated.

My DD struggled to drink milk as I think it was mixing with the yuck in her throat and it woudl make her cough and get upset.

Divvy · 07/12/2007 17:17

She ended up hainvg a bottle at 3;30 so that was good.

She has a ear infection and Upper respiratory tract infection, so after 3 doctors visits we got there in the end!

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 07/12/2007 18:31

Divvy - my dd2 has exactly the same - ear infection and URI - did Drs give you anything? My Dr wouldn't give anything to my dd - they've cut right back on penicillen. As it is with dd being sick too she'd never have kept it down anyway! Nightmare.

Divvy · 07/12/2007 19:01

Yes he gave her anitbiotics, and she has thrown up the first dose already I had a feeling just to shut me up really!

He said are you giving regular painkillers....erm kind of..as she sicks this up too!

It is a complete nightmare! Even giving tiny tiny ammounts with a syringe

OP posts:
TheIceQueen · 07/12/2007 19:54

Divvy - have you tried alternating between Neurofen and Calpol - if you do it means (hopefully) she'll keep at least some of it down, plus she'll hopefully feel more confortable.

When DS3 had that ear infection the other week the hospital said we could give him Neurofen every 6-8hrs, and Calpol every 4-6.....and that they could "overlap" so eg Neurofen could be given at 8pm, Neurofen at 10pm, Calpol again after midnight, etc etc - so as long as we weren't going "under" the recommened spacing times for each one.
