dd 17 months has white patches inside lips. What is it?

This started about 2 weeks ago. She had a fall and cut her lip, and at first I thought it was the cut healing.

However white patches still there. They aren't really on the outside bit, but more on where lips start to curve inside mouth. Not troubled by them, no other patches of white stuff inside her mouth. Anyone know?

could be thrush

fizzbuzz · 06/12/2007 11:44

Yes, that's waht I thought, but it isn't anywhere else in her mouth, just on her lip

Sounds like thrush. Get Oral Daktarin over the counter or on prsecription if you can be bothered to sit for hours in a waiting room full of vomiting kids and old people.

it still could be thrush. I would expect it to be painful though

Is Oral Daktarin an ointment? The marks aren't lumpy at all like spots. It just looks like an area (quite big) of her lip is a different colour.

She doesn't seem to be off her grub, or particulary bad tempered

maybe it's just the skin healing?

fizzbuzz · 06/12/2007 11:57

Yes, that's what I thought, but shouldn't it have healed by now? Some days it looks worse than others. Also it moves around..

My DD had oral thrush when a baby and it was like you describe An area that is just a different colour to the rest, no raised edges or spots. Daktarin is like a gel (like bonjela). It treats fungal infections anywhere on the body but the oral one is a gel. I think its about 3 quid.

Do I have to take her to docs, or can I just buy it? Bearing in mind, that ALL medicine seems to be "Unsuitable" for children under 2 unless prescribed a doc

I work on a pharmacy and it is available over the counter. The problem with under 2s is that it is not legal to test medicines on them (like pregnant women) so the companies cover their backs and say not suitable. I think my daughter was prescribed this whilst still on the bottle so must have been under 1. I would go alone and tell them she is 2 to be honest!.

I have, and described symptoms. They were adamant it wasn't thrush. There are definately no white marks inside her mouth (well as much as I can see...she wouldn't stop screaming)

But thanks for the tip
