Unexplained Bruises on my son's chin

My son has had over 9 bruises on different areas of his chin, in the last three weeks.

They are small, the size of a five or ten pence. They disappear after a couple of days.

Doctor said it was interesting but hadn't got a clue and said, maybe they will do a blood test in a couple of weeks if it keeps happening.

Has anyone heard of something like that? Any idea what could be causing this bruises.

Oh, my son is a young teenager and nothing has changed in our lives recently, he has no idea why this is happening.

Is he pressing a pen to his face at school or something?
Is it only since school started back, could it be from wearing a facemask?
Are you sure they are bruises and not dye from something?

We don't think this is something DS is doing to himself, as he is a teenager not a young kid who might thoughtlessly repeatedly hurt themselves.

The bruises develop at the weekend, as well as during the week, so unlikely to be a pen or school related. They are appearing during the day and at night. At school and at home. So really random, no patterns.

DS is worried about the bruises himself and he just wants them to go away. He is an anxious child and this is not helping atm.

Doctor looked at the last crop of marks and confirmed they look like bruises, definitely not pen marks or similar.

Just a bump for Sunday people.

It might be something he's doing in his sleep. I had mysterious bruises on my left arm, just above the wrist. It took me months to work out that it was my handbag, which had a long shoulder strap. If I leaned forward at all it would swing forward and I would automatically put my arm in its path to stop it. It didn't hurt and I didn't even notice that I was doing it but it was just enough to cause bruises.

He might be tucking a fist under his chin in his sleep and a knuckle is putting a small area of pressure on the skin causing a bruise.

Are they getting enough iron?

Mustardfan · 26/09/2021 18:11

Are the bruises under his chin? My daughter had a mysterious bruise under her chin once, I think there was a kind of crisis cross like pattern to it, when I googled it, there was a suggestion of a clotting problem. It was just that one time, it never came back, I can’t remember if I spoke to her GP.

Is he trying to squeeze spots or blackheads? Tapping a pen on his chin, sleeping with his ha d under there?

Northernsoullover · 26/09/2021 18:13

My son had unexplained bruises on his chin. Or at least they were until I caught him squeezing a lid on his chin and it was a suction bruise.

I think low iron could be possible.

He develops bruises during the day too and when he is home from school. I hope it is pen related or something.

But he is an anxious and really worried about them. However I will him to be observant about his daily habits, see if we can find the solution.

Plus I will request a gp call. We had three more appear this morning. See if they think a blood test is warranted.

Is it only his chin? I’d think he was doing something to cause them in that case. Although ds did have a some very purple marks on his chin and they wanted to investigate. Nothing came off it - they were concerned re medication

I would suggest re-examining if there's something he could be doing subconsciously. I got as far as blood tests & scans for pains and bruises on my legs, on the day of the appointment my brother was visiting me so I asked him to accompany me to watch the kids (youngest still breastfeeding) in the waiting room - sitting on the bus he told me he had solved the cause, I was whacking my shin each time I folded the double buggy and carried onto the bus (no flat entry where I lived) and with the stress of boarding I simply wasn't registering what I was doing

Today's phone appointment
GP wanted my son to get a blood test to rule out white blood cell issues. With our family history I am relieved this will be ruled out now, as unlikely as it is I am worrying.

We are to monitor his stools for blood (well I will ask DS to do that and to report back)

If he gets paler or very unwell to bring him straight back. GP doesn't think the marks are vitamin related.

I expect the blood test to rule out medical reason. Then we can relax and wait until he figures out what he is doing to get these bruises!

That is the plan. If I find out the answer I will update the thread.
