Sweating at night ... ugh ...

For the last week or two, I keep sweating at night, so much so that it sometimes wakes me. I don't feel warm, at least not when I wake. My clothes are damp, it's really horrible.

I'm getting over a chesty cold, but I'm not feverish any more, just coughing up little balls of ick.

Is this the cold? Or do I need to go see a medic?

maybe it is the last of the cold "sweating" its way out of u? have u had any sweating episodes of a night time in the past? if not, then i would wait a week and if its no better i would see your GP.

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2007 08:39

I don't think I've had this before, except when very ill/feverish/whatever.

Hmmm, if it's still happening this weekend I will have to go to the GP, it's really annoying.

(Unhelpfully I've googled for night sweats, and got lots of alarming possibilities.)

Yes I would go to gp. They won't think you are time wasting, it is an unusual and unpleasant symptom

SpacePuppy · 06/12/2007 08:41

can be a symptom of TB.

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2007 08:41

Maybe I should try to book an appointment today, which would probably be for next week, and cancel if it fixes itself.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2007 08:42

Yes, TB, Cancer (alongside unexplained weight loss, which I sorta have ), HIV ... all sorts of good stuff. Hurrah.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 06/12/2007 08:43

Yes, why not?

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2007 08:43

I should say, though, DH has had the same bug, and had the night sweats, his just went away a lot faster. It's almost certainly down to the cold.

I don't want to go to the doctors. This whole operation business about my eye has me thoroughly sick of anything medical.

Yes, I'll go.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 06/12/2007 08:47

Oh dear, I can understand that. I hope it passes before the appointment comes around.

SpacePuppy · 06/12/2007 08:51

Can also be viral pneumonia, you apparently also get a "walking pneumonia". It will probably be better to have it looked at sooner, pneumonia can leave scarring in the lungs.

loopylou6 · 06/12/2007 09:11

very reaurring that hubby has had the same thing, i would bet its just down to the cold, make sure u dress lighlty for bed and dont set the heating to come on through the night etc, AND STOP GOOGLING

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2007 09:29

We have no heat in our house, not really. And never had any in the night, anyway.

I'm always freezing at bedtime ...

Unlikely both DH and I have walking pneumonia?

(And I'm off for a run, I ran yesterday. I couldn't run with pneumonia could I?)

night sweats normally point to other things if it goes on longer then a week i would go see gp just to check things out

Mercy · 06/12/2007 09:39

I have this occasionally at the end of a heavy cold.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2008 09:42

Well, I'm still having this. It seems to come and go a bit, but it's still freaking me the hell out.

So I'm off to see the GP in a bit. I don't know what she's going to say, given I've been to her, in the last few months about a leaky eye (having op in February), sleep problems (got scrip, had one pill, not making a habit of it) and now this. Ah well.

No meds, well, I'm on steroid inhalers (asthma), but don't use them much. Nothing else.

The GP didn't seem too bothered, but I'm having blood tests. Thyroid is one thing she flagged. They'll check my blood sugar (I'm high risk for diabetes).

Thing is, because I'm having a GA in February, I need to make sure I'm in tip-top shape, or at least, that any problems are diagnosed and known about.

Oh, and I had to get into the weight loss thing - I've lost maybe 15 or 20 kg in the last couple of years, 5 kg since the summer. None of it on purpose exactly, but it's not unexplained, either.

Weight loss + night sweats = scary scary.

It really could just be stress, actually. Between the holidays, my OU course, my ILs coming to stay, etc etc, I have plenty of things to be stressed about, January is going to be a real zoo.

But the GP asked if I felt stressed when I woke up in the night, wet, and I don't. And I'm not having notably bad dreams, either.

just seen this - any news from your bloods???

KTurner · 17/01/2008 09:33

I sweat every night, only a bit, on my chest area though.

How are things with you now?

Threadworm · 17/01/2008 09:38

When I mentioned night sweats to my GP she made me go and have a chest X-ray, presumably to rule out TB (and pneumonia?)

It turned out fine, but if you have been suffering from a chesty cold I really would mention the sweats to your GP, so that a chest infection could be ruled out.
(Disclaimer: I am totlally ignorant medically)

mimimilk · 17/01/2008 12:59

This is probably no help as such but I am having the exact same problem. Have had (over last month) chest infection, flu and now have tonsillitis. have been having quite severe night sweats for the duration of this time.

Have mentioned it to Gp several times as very worryingly i have a close relative who has recently dies of TB (have been told by various people/ health protection agency that we are not at risk though). On the other slightly less alarming hand, my OH had the sweats for about a week when he had the flu but his have passed now.

I think this is relatively common, but gets alarming when you google etc! Please let us know what happens.
