Thyroid lump

Hi
Just after some advice from anyone who has had investigations for a lump on the thyroid. Sorry this is long!
I noticed some lymph nodes above my collarbone were swollen and so contacted GP via e-consult. (I had a previous ultrasound in June for swollen nodes at the back of my neck and these were fine although a small nodule on the thyroid was noted).
In between GP responding to my e-consult, I felt what seemed like a large lump on the right side of my neck. If I'm honest I had felt a thickening in this area for months and dismissed it but it now felt bigger. GP wrote back to say they would send me for a follow up ultrasound likely to happen in a couple of months.
Since finding the large lump, I googled and discovered it was likely my thyroid. And together with the swollen nodes above my collarbone should be checked sooner than a couple of months.
Luckily we have private health insurance so I was able to direct refer and I saw an ENT consultant yesterday. He put a camera down my nose to view the voice box - all fine. He felt the lump and it's 2cm x 4cm. Nodes are swollen both sides. I had bloods taken today. Ultrasound with FNA is booked for Friday and MRI booked for following Friday. I see consultant on 5th October for follow-up.
Thing is I have convinced myself it's cancer. And I have read that thyroid cancer is slpw growing and very treatable but the consultant was concerned that the nodule had grown so much in 3 months. The word cancer was mentioned as a possibility. I've had breast cancer before and I remember then the consultant was keen to reassure before tests were done that the lump seemed OK. On that occasion it wasn't. I've also been diagnosed with a probable meningioma in my brain and again in the early stages, the consultant was keen to reassure that it seemed OK.
This consultant wasn't trying to reassure me. Not because he wasn't a kind man but in my head I am convinced he couldn't reassure me because his experience tells him it is likely malignant.
Also everything I have read has prepared me to expect the ultrasound with FNA but why has he put me in for an MRI?
Any thoughts, advice, words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi
My ultrasound and fna was inclusive
At a team meeting it was decided to partially remove my thyroid
And send for testing
Thankfully it came back just a lot of thyroid cells multiplying and no cancer
My scar isn't too pretty but it needed to be done
It was all done within 2 weeks of the team meeting ( just in case )
Hope yours turns out ok too

Hi
Thanks for replying wfrances
How big was your lump if you don't mind me asking? Was your op 2 weeks after your scan? How long was your recovery?
Sorry - lots of questions!

I know someone who had thyroid cancer, went through all the treatment including having a radioactive implant and she is fine now. My understanding is it is one of the most treatable cancers so even if it is bad news that is something to try and reassure yourself about. Best wishes.

Thanks starryskies.
I'm not usually an anxious person but the visit to the consultant has got me worried. I shouldn't read too much into it but at least I am on the fastrack pathway or whatever its called so I'm in the best hands.

I'm not sure
You could feel it but not see it
And it was originally picked up in a mri for another issue
But it kept growing
It was 2weeks after the team meeting so about 4 weeks after the scan and biopsy
It was painful until the drain was removed
I couldn't eat for a while as it felt swollen deep inside
Everytime I swallowed I felt like choking, I had to have a drip in the end
My throat felt very tight like a scarf was pulled too tight and it was uncomfortable but not very painful
I couldn't move my neck properly for months though

It needed to be removed , even if it wasn't cancer as it was growing and the worry that it would press on my windpipe

That sounds like it was very uncomfortable wfrances. I hope you're 100% now.
I think mine may need to be removed. I get this wierd 'butterfly fluttering' sensation in my throat which was infrequent but seems to be getting more frequent. And a feeling of pressure when I lie down at night.
