Ds (23mths) has had a high temp all day long.

He had 2 spoons of calpol this am and then 1 this afternoon.

Now he absolutly roasting again and I was gonna give him either some more calpol or some medised BUT I have a bottle of Calprofen (ibuprofen) too, can give him that with either the calpol or the medised ??

you can give him ibuprofen between the calpol or medised doses - e.g 2 hours or so afterwards

beachyhead · 10/11/2004 17:57

I've always given
Calpol then 2 hours then Nurofen, then two hours, then Calpol.

Don't give at the same time, but you can alternate so you can give medicine more often.

nutcracker · 10/11/2004 17:58

Ahh right, well he will be asleep in the next few seconds judging from the look of him, so which is best to give him Ibuprofen or Calpol ????

ibuprofen lasts longer and takes down a fever

paracetomal (calpol) only stabilises a temp

so give the ibuprofen

nutcracker · 10/11/2004 17:59

Didn't have the ibuprofen until dp got it on the way hoime from work otherwise i would have done the 2hour thing.

Ibuprofen I'd say - hope he gets better soon!

Twiglett · 10/11/2004 17:59

is calprofen for children then?

nutcracker · 10/11/2004 17:59

Thanks Twig

Yep it is from 6mths to 12yrs.

I think it is just by the makers of Calpol but it's ibuprofen.

Nutcracker just go by the recommended doses on the bottles - cos one is every 6 hrs and one is every four hours they 'meet up' at some point so don't worry too much - I think!

Thanks guys.

I gave him some Ibuprofen about an hour and half ago. He went straight to sleep then, but has just stirred again. He still seems to be too hot, so when he stirs again (which i'm sure he will) then i wil give him the calpol then.

Feel so sorry for him and bloody helpless . He is whimpering and crying out in his sleep, and doesn't seem himself at all. He has hardley eaten a thing all day either.

Nutcracker, don't overdress him when he sleeps. Just a vest will do, or even just a nappy. You can also sponge him down with tepid water. NOT cold, as that will make his body try to heat up more. hth.

Loobie · 10/11/2004 20:29

A fan at the side of his bed if you have one and/or an open window, also dont mix the calpopl with the medised as they both contain paracetamol.Try giving a dose of brufen and calpol at the same time to initially get the temp down then go onto alternate doses.Medised can also make him sleepy so maybe not what you want for during the day.

Nutracker - my sympathies with you - I've been struggling with poorly DD1 last week and now DD2 this wee (24 months).

When oldest had very high temp last year - we had to take her to casualty and they said to give calpol and nurofen together. Also they stripped her off, and opened the windows and it was bloody freezing outside. Basically you have to do whatever you can to lower the temp and this is what they did.

Good luck, hope he is better soon.

nutcracker · 10/11/2004 20:39

Thank again

He is sleeping in just a vest and a sheet over him. I have also opened the window slightly so hopefully that will help.

Tatcity - It's a nightmare isn't it. First dd2 had it, and now ds. Dd1 has escaped so far which i am grateful for as it's her birthday tommorow.

yeah, bloody nightmare - just sick of it now. Poor little DD2 not herself at all. Hate it when the little ones are poorly. Keep going up to check she's not choking in her sleep!!!! Happy birthday to DD1 for tomorrow.
