Having gynaecology surgery

RainbowBriteUk · 18/09/2021 22:18

I have cysts, fibroids and a very thick womb lining together with endometriosis so I'm due to have surgery. These cause extremely heavy flooding and blood clots which can go on for weeks/months on end.

The consultant hasn't really discussed what this surgery will be but knows I still want to be able to have children in the future.

Has anyone had this surgery, and were you in pain/bleeding after? Also was yours day surgery as I want to be at home after the procedure.

On the basis of what you describe it is unlikely to be day surgery so try to start managing your own expectations about that now.

If you are child bearing age and or don’t have children they will be very focussed on preserving your fertility.

All the best. I hope that it all goes well and you will be recovered soon.

RainbowBriteUk · 19/09/2021 10:45

Hi, thanks for your reply @vincettenoir. I desperately hope it is as I have two events at work the next day! Ones that I can take it very easy at but two events all the same! Plus, it says day surgery on my letter.

If they are removing cysts and fibroids you will have had a General anaesthetic. You will not be fit to work the next day..you shouldn't really drive or to anything needing concentration for 24-48 hours after.

vincettenoir · 19/09/2021 11:07

That sounds promising. The surgeons will have a good idea of what they are planning and have likely done an MRI so hopefully that’s right. However even with keyhole surgery if the ablation / cutting away is extensive then you might need to be in longer than planned. I hope you’re not. Either way bring a tablet or a phone backed up with some downloaded shows / podcasts. All the best and I hope you are back on your feet soon.

Sounds like you need to take a few days off work - i had some investigations under sedation a while back, no general or surgery, and i was wiped out for a few days.

emmathedilemma · 19/09/2021 15:06

If you’re having a general anaesthetic you won’t be going to a work event the next day!! You need to ask what the surgical procedure is as many options to relieve these symptoms can reduce your chances of having children.

RainbowBriteUk · 19/09/2021 15:49

I need to go to work.

The consultant knows I still want children so hopefully has taken that into account when selecting my surgery.

I think you need to go back and clarify exactly what the surgery is, especially as retaining your fertility is an important consideration for you.

I wouldn't be planning to go to a work event the next day. Even if it's keyhole surgery, you'll feel tired and sore and will need to rest for a few days afterwards.

squashie34 · 19/09/2021 21:22

@RainbowBriteUk it sounds like you will be having a laparoscopy (key hole surgery). It's the only way to fully treat endometriosis and cysts.. I've had 6 so far, with my biggest surgery 3 years ago where they removed endo from my ovaries, bladder, bowel and uterus. I would say it took my about 4 weeks to really feel myself again- I was told to take 2 weeks off work but I needed 2 more of reduced hours as I was so tired.

I too wanted to maintain my fertility as I hadn't had children (and was worried with my endo I might not be able to anyway), and 5 months after the surgery I unexpectedly fell pregnant which was amazing!

Good luck, you'll be fine and the relief you feel after is fab.

squashie34 · 19/09/2021 21:23

I should also add that I was in hospital for 2 days after the last surgery, but some of my laps I've had I have been out the same day. It really depends how much they rummage round in there x

RainbowBriteUk · 21/09/2021 09:51

Hi @squashie34 thanks for your reply. How did you feel afterwards? Were you in lots of pain?

OP posts:
squashie34 · 21/09/2021 10:23

@RainbowBriteUk I was in main but it wasn't unmanageable at all. I just took regular paracetamol and ibuprofen every 4 hours for the first 2 weeks even if I didn't feel I needed it as then it didn't give the pain time to develop. If I ever forgot to take them id soon know about it. The quicker you are up and slowly walking round the quicker the healing time x

I had day gynae surgery, home in the evening it signed off for 2 weeks. Day 1 I thought I'd be back to work in less than a week but I needed the second week as I was exhausted. Pain was ok, as I'd had lots of gynae pain before the op so easy to handle. I think it was the general anaesthetic that knocked me for 6.

I don't think it's realistic to expect to be back at work the next day I'm afraid.

CharlotteRose90 · 21/09/2021 10:34

It sounds like you’ll have the same key hole surgery I had . Mine was for adeno and cysts. Mine was meant to be key hole and I had to stay there 5 days as I developed an infection. Every surgery is different but if you have to go to work the next day I would postpone it. You aren’t meant to work or drive for 48 hours following surgery. I for one slept a full 10 hours following surgery. What’s more important surgery or work?

Amz6219 · 21/09/2021 10:41

I had laparoscopy with excision of endometriosis, was GA under for around 3 hours and signed off for 2 weeks.

The first day was worse than recovery from EMCS, but it got better a lot quicker. Mainly gas pain in my chest and bruising. Stayed in bed for a day or two but was up and about albeit feeling rough after that.

Not a chance I would have been in work the next day!

SarahBellam · 21/09/2021 10:45

I had uterine femoral embolisation for fibroids a few years ago and was in hospital overnight and off work for about 8 days - it is much less invasive than surgery and I was semi conscious throughout. I cannot think of a procedure you could have that would enable you to go to work the next day. You really need to talk to your doctor to find out what procedure they'll be doing on you and your likely recovery time.

SummerHouse · 21/09/2021 10:51

Nobody needs to be at work. You need to recover.

emmathedilemma · 21/09/2021 11:21

I had that too @SarahBellam had my procedure on a Wednesday, stayed in overnight and he signed me off for the rest of that week and the following 2 weeks. To be fair, by the end of it I felt like I was skivving a bit! If you’ve had a GA I’d expect them to automatically sign you off work.
