is it normal for flucloxacillin to upset a baby so much?

ds2 (4.5mo) is 2 days into a course of abs prescribed for a minor skin infection

seems to be suffering - very unsettled, crying a lot, and has bad diarrhoea

is already into his second nap of the day

should i call the gp, or is this a normal side-effect?

I would call the GP and ask their advice. abs often cause some side effects but if she's feeling this rotten on them it may be better for her to have something else.

I'm pretty sure that the diarrhoea is a side effect of Flucloxacillin, but there should be a leaflet with the medicine. However, there are a lot of tummy bugs around at the moment too.

If in doubt, give the pharmacist a ring. They are a wonderful source of sensible info, and are always available on the end of the phone.

Poor little mite. It sounds as if he is now worse than he was with the skin infection!

i would call GP and ask for a different one. dd1 reacted badly to erothyomicin (sp?) in a similar way to your ds2. her bottom was read raw within hours.

Tutter · 05/12/2007 10:34

yes, infection (impetigo) very mild - just looks like a couple of sore, burst blisters

but he's so unhappy on these meds

didn't realise there was a leaflet, as it's in liquid form, in a bottle, but looking now the label peels off the bottle. yes, upset stomach listed as a poss side-effect.

think i shall call the gp to be on the safe side

Sorry tutter - I should read more carefully - you said ds not dd

Tutter · 05/12/2007 10:35

may be too harsh for him - i think she said it's for minimum aged 6 months, but thought it would be ok for ds2 as he's so huge

Well..I am 35 and it upset my tum a LOT!

Tutter · 05/12/2007 12:55

gp has said to stop the abs [relief] - infection is so minor that she thinks not worth the side-effects

wish we had not started them tbh - would rather avoid abs for kids where poss
