My god the pain! I was literally kneeling on the floor and I reached into DDs wardrobe to get her a vest and it just went!

It's more so 'inside' so I can't press where it hurts but it's agony when I breath and it's sort of coming round my ribs and into the front.

I took some co codamol about 30 minutes ago and it's done nothing.
I've got a 10 month old to run around after and I can hardly move!

Anyone got any suggestions? I'm laid in a really hot bath as DD is napping. DH is here as there is no way I can pick her up.

Will 111 do anything?

Something so simple I just reached to get her a vest. The pain is awful :(

Any suggestions please!

Sad yes call 111
Jedstre · 18/09/2021 11:10

Sorry, that’s happened to me before and it’s awful!
Google McKenzie method. It looks like there’s YouTube videos. I’ve got the book and there’s an emergency procedure to follow when your back ‘goes’ which involves lying on your front.
Continue regular painkillers but it’s likely your back is in spasm. Diazepam can help but needs to be prescribed.
Don’t attempt picking up your daughter, your DH will have to do all that. Might take a few days to settle.

My back did this many years ago, I was making almost exactly the same movement when it went, I agree it sounds like a muscle spasm which is what mine was. One of the things I found quite helpful was the single use heat pads you can buy at pharmacies - Boots etc - that stick to the inside of your clothes. Some stick to your skin instead, be careful to check which kind you've got. They last anything between 8-24 hours usually & do give some relief.

You should probably call your OOH if you have one, or GP if they offer service on Saturday mornings, they may be able to prescribe you something. Otherwise you should see a pharmacist, if you can't walk & have a young child you need medical attention ASAP. I know I couldn't even stand myself up from a chair/bed for nearly a week, & couldn't walk without a limp for at least a few months.

It's tempting to just lay in bed to try to "rest it" but apparently this is unhelpful, you need to be gently moving about as soon & as often as you feel able to. If you need heat / massage / antispasmodic medication to accomplish that for a while, do it. Be aware that a back spasm may take a long time to fully heal. Mine is still occasionally troublesome but more like mild sciatica these days, & responds well to warmth & stretching. I do have to be careful though, & I always have a pack of the heat pads on standby.

Do you have anyone who can come and help you, OP?

RubyGoat · 18/09/2021 11:31

By medical attention, I mean medical advice*. I don't mean the OP needs to go to hospital or anything.

Dandy0911 · 18/09/2021 11:51

Thank you everybody!
I'm going to have a look on YouTube.

I'm going to call the out of hours, I've just googled and it looks like our GP does an out of hours on Saturday until 3pm so hopefully they can help!

DH is here luckily. I have no idea how I'm going to get out of this bath! You'd think I've done some sort of strenuous weight lifting!

DH has found some naproxen in the cupboard. I might give that a go.

And yes to heat pads! We've got a huge boots up the road so poor DH is going to take a look for me to get some heat pads.

Thank you everybody, very helpful! :)

If you take the naproxen OP do make sure it's with food, ideally you need something to protect your stomach.
Agree with pp about light but regular movement to stop it seizing completely Flowers

lljkk · 18/09/2021 11:59

muscle relaxants, youtube exercises, and preventive measures in future.
Hope you feel better soon.

hot water bottle made mine much worse.
Try not to stay still all the time. You might seize up completely.

Dandy0911 · 18/09/2021 12:00

@Heartbeats0708

I had some poached eggs on toast about an hour and a half ago, I'm going to have a banana and a cup of tea and take them after.
They can be quite harsh on the stomach can't they!

Luckily my next door neighbour is a GP. He has said naproxen is fine but to ring 111 and see what they say.

The pain is unreal!!

Sounds like muscle spasm.
You need to do hot and cold.
So 5 minutes heat, 5 minutes cold( wrapped in thin cloth to protect your skin). Swap over a few times.
Do this 3 times a day.

Tomorrow try a gentle walk for 10 minutes.
I see an osteopath regularly. Gentle movement and no slouching on soft furniture is always advised.

Elieza · 18/09/2021 13:48

When I put my back out it was when I twisted to the side holding something.

Apparently backs don’t like twisting.

I was told to strengthen my core by doing e revised and that would help it not happen again.

Hopefully they will give you advice on 111 and a prescription for tramadol and diazepam. It relaxes the muscles and lets things slide back into where they should be.

bluebell34567 · 18/09/2021 14:30

if you dont have heat pad, vicks softens it, too. but 111 first.

wineandsunshine · 18/09/2021 15:32

You need naproxen and diazepam - both were a godsend when I did the same thing emptying a bin.

Elieza · 18/09/2021 17:31

I meant ‘strengthen my core doing exercises’ earlier. Stupid fat thumbs and autocorrect!

Dandy0911 · 18/09/2021 18:39

Back from out of hours with diazepam and some more naproxen. I've never taken diazepam before! I'm laid on the sofa with a cuppa and ice cream. I'm so chilled out it's actually quite nice! Got some heat patches too.

Dr thinks nerves / muscle spasms. He did say it will be worse tomorrow so not looking forward to that.

Thank you everybody!

Enjoy it while you can then! Hope tomorrow’s not as bad as the doc thinks! Shock

wineandsunshine · 18/09/2021 18:50

Enjoy that floaty feeling!

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 20/09/2021 00:38

I sympathize! I've 4 fractured vertebra L1 - L4 at the moment after falling off my horse - enjoy the diazepam! 💐
