Mole does it look unusual?

Have recently noted a new mole on my thigh. Think it has been there for around six months, in the last couple of weeks has been bothering me, a little itchy but nothing else.

Did an econsult with Dr on Monday and they requested face to face appointment. Went this afternoon, Dr used torch on his phone to look and said he has no concerns just to keep an eye on it.

I am still a little worried just wondered whether anyone else has had a similar and whether a second opinion (happy to pay privately) might be a good idea.

Have included photos.

Thank you for any advice!

I had a private mole check £200.

NHS gave me this checklist. If you have two or more of these features, should be checked by a doc.

  1. Itchy or odd sensation
  2. Size. Less than 7mm usually ok.
  3. Increasing size, esp if you are over 35.
  4. Irregular or notched outline.
  5. Patchy pigmentation esp if there are red white or blush areas.
  6. Red inflammatory flare around the edge.
  7. Crusting or bleeding.

My GP absolutely refused to give any opinion on my odd mole and said dermatology appt was usually needed.

If you've got the money why not get a proper dermatologist to see it, but it looks from the above list that there's no need to worry while you're waiting.

Thank you, that is very helpful.

This mole looks very different to my others, I think I will have a private check just to put my mind at rest.

The list you have given has helped me in the meantime. Thanks again!

I would second a private check just to put your mind at rest. I am not a doctor , the mole looks normal enough to me and isn’t showing any concerning signs but it’s definitely worth getting it checked out.

@Willdoitlater

Was the £200 for a single mole? I have a few I'd like checking out and my GP isn't being hugely helpful.

Willdoitlater · 17/09/2021 21:38

@worrybutterfly £200 was for a single one, but I only had one that needed looking at, so I don’t know if I could have had more looked at. I'm sure I could have got it cheaper, if I'd shopped around. That was the price for a consultant appt at the local Spire hospital. (Except it was actually done by photo/phone due to you-know-what.)

My husband went to the mole clinic in London.
I think they have them outside London too.
They do a ‘map’ of your body and you can go back once a year and they look for changes.
The do single mole checks too, the website say £50.

I would push for a referral to a dermatologist. GP’s are not qualified to assess a mole.

Thisismyusername1 · 17/09/2021 22:49

Thank you all, I have looked at The Mole Clinic and I am going to book an appointment for them to assess it just in case.

Yes get a referral to dermatology.....definately don’t opt for a video call assessment ....when I was assessed by the dermatologist they used an ultra violet light as part of the process.
