yes, it's my ds1

just want some reassurance that it's not a gory and painful procedure

don't really know but hope he's ok in the meantime and someone expert will come along soon.

suzywong · 05/12/2007 11:54

well that's just the thing, he is perfectly healthy but has high levels of ferritin and the paed/gastro and the paed/immno have run all the blood tests there are on him and now they want a piece of him. Literally.

Dh is waiting to have one done. Apparently it isn't painful, it is done under local, and they go in through an artery or vein (I can't recall which) in the neck with a camarea and head down to the liver and take a couple of samples.

suzywong · 05/12/2007 12:07

are you worried about it?

ComeOVeneer · 05/12/2007 12:08

Not particularly about the proceedure itself, more what the results will show.

VictorianSqualor · 05/12/2007 12:17

I've had a kidney biopsy, not the same but I can tell you it wasn't painful or gory in the slightest.
I had to lie on my stomach for an hour or so, they gave me a local anaesthetic and put a catheter in. They then went in through my back (from what comeoveneer says it looks different for liver though). It was a penlike thing, imagine someone clicking a biro on your back, that was it. The only annoying thing was having to lay on my stomach for a good few hours afterwards.

suzywong · 05/12/2007 12:41

so no gore
I think my 6yr old ds1 needs a general though

we are going to see the paedo/gastro without ds1 next week (there's nothing wrong with him on examination so she doesn't need to see him again) to talk about the procedure.
Naturally we are cacking ourselves that it is cancer.
I mean you always thing the worst doncha?

VictorianSqualor · 05/12/2007 12:44

Of course, I hope it all works out fine.

ComeOVeneer · 05/12/2007 17:56

Exactly my fear too. DH has elevated liver enzymes and they keep rising with no known reason.

dejags · 05/12/2007 18:03

No experience of this.

Just wanted to say I am thinking of you Suzy and of course you too COV.

Suzy, why was your DS tested in the first place - what were his symptoms?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 05/12/2007 18:08

Hi there.

From my knowledge/experience, your lo will be sedated and given local anaesthetic. A needle is then passed through the skin into the liver (the liver is big and can't be missed) and a section is taken and passed up through the needle.

It will take longer to sedate him than for the biopsy to be done. Your ds may be a bit uncomfortable afterwards, but the strongest thing he would need is paracetamol.

Good luck xx

kokeshi · 05/12/2007 18:16

I had one of these done when I was at uni. Exactly how ILikeToMoveItMoveIt described. I felt a sort of pushing sensation when they were sticking the needle in and was watching as they sucked a bit of my liver out. That was quite freaky! The sample was about an inch long and about half a cm in width.

Hardly took any time at all, iirc. Best wishes to ds.

thanks everyone

poor little sod has to have a circumcision soon as well
he's bound to get some kind of "parts of my body being snatched" syndrome.

He had a blood test ordered initially by a dermatologist and the liver functions came back as abnormal so no alarm bell ringing symptoms in the first place and perfectly healthy little boy here.

Right, thanks for the info, best wishes to all, thread closed
