Morning everyone,

Over dinner last night DH noticed something in my hair and we quickly realised it was a bald patch, about the size of a 10p/20p.

We've looked over my head for abubither onvious signs and will call GP tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone knows what it could be?

My two thoughts are alopecia or covid related hair loss (been isolating this week with covid).

I'm quite upset and feel a bit sick with worry about it.

Hello, I have had alopecia for 25 years. I bald patch like that in that position near the hairline behind the ear is a classic hallmark of alopecia areata.

Thank you @HandfulofFlowers.

I think my worry primarily comes from not knowing. Hopefully thr GP can confirm.

My husband has one in the same place. Same reason.

He had one of few years ago nearer the top of his head but the hair grew back.

Yes, in some ways a diagnosis of alopecia is a relief because it rules out any problems that could have a more serious impact on your general health. If it is alopecia areata then your GP might refer you to a dermatologist. One thing I would say is don't be tempted by the expensive "clinics" that prey on your insecurities. I know not one single person who feels they had a positive effect.

I cant sleep so thought I'd let you know what the nurse said. She thinks it's ringworm (she called it the Latin name but when I googled it, it was ringworn). So I've got antifungal treatment for it and a checkup in a few weeks. She said she wanted to rule that out as if left untreated it can cause scarring.
