Prescribed flucanazole - still in agony

I recently had bad food poisoning.
This then led onto the early symptoms of thrush.
I applied clotrimazole cream a few times a day and it just got worse

Managed to get a face to face gp appointment for swabs as they wanted to rule anything else out and confirmed as definite thrush.

They prescribed me 6 tablets of flucanazole to take each week for 6 weeks to get it out of my system as I’d said I’d suffered on and off for a few months (seems to be hormonal) but that the clotrimazole cream had generally been enough to get rid of it

It’s now 36 hours after taking the flucanazole and still applying clotrimazole and if anything it’s worse.
The itch is nearly unbearable.

Is it normal for flucanazole to take a while to work and can it get worse before it gets better?

I desperately want a normal sexual relationship with DH but this has been getting in the way so often that we hardly manage it at all anymore

It seems that when we do it just makes me worse even though we’d only have PIV if I have no symptoms

I had awful thrush once and was prescribed daktarin cream with tampon like applicators. I think you can get that over the counter but maybe a stronger version available on prescription.

GotToGoBye · 11/09/2021 17:45

I think they will take longer to work - usually over the course of a week, I’ve never heard of them making things worse. I think give it another couple of days.

JollyHostess · 11/09/2021 17:45

When I had thrush so bad I had to go to the GP I had three of those tablets to take on consecutive days! I'd be tempted to take the sixth one now, if that makes sense.

PumpkinsGalore · 11/09/2021 17:47

Usually Fluconazole is 3 tablets over 7 days. Honestly, take another one. You can buy them from ASDA pharmacy and it says on the packet that if one doesn't work, then to take 3 over 7 days

PumpkinsGalore · 11/09/2021 17:49

I also find either Vagisil helps or even Eurax cream if you can bare the 30 seconds of stinging after putting it on. It does kill the itch for 10 hours after though!

Thetrainisinthestation · 11/09/2021 17:52

I’ve taken a second tablet. I’ve got 4 left.
Gp will prescribe more if I need them (or I can buy them online pretty cheaply anyway if I think it’s doing the trick)

Could I be becoming resistant to flycanazole?

In the past one tablet and 12 hours later if be tip top again

I don’t mind pain, I’d take pain over incessant itching any day

What’s weird is I didn’t have a huge amount of discharge when I initially saw the gp but after taking the flucanazole the discharge is loads

I’ve coated a tampon in cream and hoping that gives some relief until the flucanazole can kick in

I haven’t had a chance to get something numbing

Honestly, I always need the pessary. Always. Maybe add that into the mix.

Is your dh treating himself too? Maybe you are passing it between you
sadie9 · 12/09/2021 00:03

Is the itching mainly on the outer areas? If so it could be localised eczema which I developed. It was hormonally triggered. Mistaken for thrush for years til one GP diagnosed it. They kept detecting thrush but that wasnt the problem
I got a steroid ointment that stopped it overnight.

Thetrainisinthestation · 15/09/2021 19:07

I’m still in agony, I’ve now taken 4 of the flucanazole they gave me.
I’ve also bought probiotics to try and help (they arrived today)
And coating myself in canesten

Swabs confirmed as thrush but it must be resistant or something because this is ridiculous
