Help! Cannot seem to get rid of Phlegm.

So I had a really bad cold that started about 4 weeks ago and lasted just over 2 weeks. I had phlegm, sinus ache, muffled ears, headaches and half way through a really chesty cough. Was a pretty rubbish cold infact the worst cold I’ve had. Now i can’t seem to shift the phlegm. I no longer have a cough, I don’t have nasal mucus but I seem to be clearing my throat of phlegm a few times a day. Yellow coloured and just unpleasant. I don’t know why I still have it but I had a telephone app with the GP who said it can last 4/6 weeks after a cold. Does anyone know any remedies I can try or tips? Anything I can buy over the counter. Or just any words that may help? I suffer with health anxiety so anything like this really gets on top of me.

Try taking an antihistamine daily. You may have a dust or pollen allergy that is exacerbating it.

My daughter's had this for almost 2 years
GP couldn't find a cause

FelicityBeedle · 11/09/2021 14:39

Have a google of something called active cycle of breathing technique. If you can take an OTC mucolytic and do that you should see a difference

ACCx · 11/09/2021 14:47

@AntiHop interesting you say this as I do suffer with hayfever often. Thank you.
@purpleme12 oh no, I guess it is common?
@FelicityBeedle thank you I will have a google now and take a look!!

Much appreciated all x

I don't think it's common
I've no idea why it started and why it hasn't stopped

purpleme12 · 11/09/2021 14:54

(the doctor gave my daughter something for allergies in case it was that.
And also an inhaler in case it was asthma. Neither made a difference)

ACCx · 11/09/2021 15:02

@purpleme12 oh dear. does she have any other symptoms with it other than the phlegm?

No that's the wierd thing lol

ThePontiacBandit · 11/09/2021 15:11

DD has this. Dr Google said lactose intolerance was the most likely cause. Switched her over to lactose free milk and it went away!

ACCx · 11/09/2021 15:29

@ThePontiacBandit interesting! Thank you. How long did it take to go away?

OP posts:
ThePontiacBandit · 11/09/2021 15:46

It went within a couple of weeks, just gradually improved. Now she has some lactose but we stick with the milk because it seems to help.

I had this for months following a chest infection and my gp prescribed me a steroid nasal spray that cleared it up

GoodnightGrandma · 11/09/2021 18:07

I’ve heard mention of a salt water flush, but I’m not sure what you do. Perhaps sniff it in and spit it out ?

mariebaby3 · 11/09/2021 18:08

@GoodnightGrandma that’s a good shout too! Search up neilmed. You pour the solution through one nostril and it comes out of the other nostril, then swap. It’s really very good at clearing everything up!

My asthma started with phlegm. No other signs really apart from excess phlegm, for years. Then it got worse and I was diagnosed.

Exercise helps get rid of phlegm it makes you cough it up. The longer it sits in your lungs it seems the greater chance of it becoming inflected, so regular cardiovascular exercise really makes a difference. Echinacea tablets boost your immune system and help cure almost anything, I find. Benylin helps with phlegm too.

I don't know if steam would work or if that's only for sinuses? Bowl of boiling water, Vicks melted into it, put a towel over your head to trap the steam, lean over the bowl and breathe.

purpleme12 · 11/09/2021 18:41

@FluffyWhiteBird wow that's really interesting

ACCx · 12/09/2021 13:20

Thank you everybody. I’ve had a hayfever tablet today and so far nothing so perhaps that is this issue? Did feel a little bunged up before though so I will maybe try the nasal spray ideas x
