Anyone had an Iv iron infusion

To explain my medical history would take pages but in a nutshell, I had cancer 10 years ago. I have just been diagnosed with severe aenemia. They don't think it's cancer (nor do I) but they need to rule it out so lots of hospital appointments and investigations coming up. In the meantime, my consultant referred me for an Iv Iron infusion. I had it on Wednesday. That evening, I was exhausted but I worked yesterday and felt I had slightly more energy. Then, I woke up this morning with the most strange pains. It was like a gripping pain in my abdomen/chest which released a bit then moved to my back before moving to my arms and shoulders. Pretty painful. This was happening intermittently. I took the day off work as I felt so rough. I've slept this afternoon, taken painkillers and rested and it's eased a bit. I am still experiencing some pain. I called the hospital and they said this can happen and I should be okay in a day or 2. Google said the same! Has anyone else experienced similar issues after iron iv and if so, how long did it last?

Hi, I had an IV iron infusion about four years ago. Felt fine for first twenty four hours then flu/hit by a bus/nausea feeling for about forty eight hours. Nothing like your pain. I then felt absolutely wonderful and realised what "normal" was. Can you contact the department that administered the transfusion? Try not to worry. I seem to remember the side effects list was v long.

Thanks. I spoke to the dept that administered it and they said it can happ and will last up to 48 hours. My cancer caused huge bowel problems so my stomach, bowel and abdo area are very sensitive and if there's an issue it always shows up on those area. Get the hit by the bus feeling though. Thanks, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one feeling rough afterwards.

Yes, I did. I had a horrible cramping in my tummy and was given laxatives for a bit. But I had just given birth - it was probably just my womb adjusting Blush

@marmiteonmykeyboard what ferritin levels did you go from and up to? Interested to know what level 'good' is!

Bbq1 · 10/09/2021 19:07

Sorry to hear that everyone has has nasty side effects. I wasn't aware there were really any beforehand.
