Hard lump/area upper abdomen

Hi
While waiting for my ultrasound I thought I'd ask if anyone has experienced this.
For a few months now, I can feel a hard area in my upper central/right abdomen, roughly the size of my hand.
When I stand up and feel that area, it feels significantly harder than the left side, but when I lie down, it disappears and I can't feel anything. I am very slim, but I can't see any visible mass, although I feel it. GP didn't shed much light and just schedule an ultrasound.
Had anyone experienced this before? It doesn't hurt, but my upper right side is definitely harder than my upper left side.

I have a similar thing. Did your scan shed any light on it?

JESS1211 · 15/11/2021 14:17

Hi @bumps13

The scan revealed I have gallstones and that the 'lump/hard area' was due to inflammation of my gallbladder when playing up. I'm not quite sure about that explanation as the 'lump' felt big and below where my GB should be, but nothing else was seen. My gallstones/inflammation has since calmed down and the lump isn't there anymore, so it could have been that.

What is yours like? Do you have any other symptoms?

Bumps13 · 17/11/2021 10:25

I’m glad it has calmed down and the lump has gone. Mine feels very big too. Just below the bottom of my right ribs and like you, I’m slim and can only feel it when standing up, not when laying down. I have no idea where your hall bladder is meant to be felt?!

Bumps13 · 17/11/2021 10:27

Did you feel any pain when you pressed on the lump you had?

JESS1211 · 17/11/2021 10:45

@bumps13 I think the GB is just under the right rib. It's small and I don't think you're meant to feel it, but the Dr said the lump was from the inflammation of the GB.
Yes, my lump was tender if I pressed on it, and I noticed it more the day after eating fatty foods. I had a liver panel and FBC which were all normal.
Do you have pain when pressing your lump? Do you have a scan booked?

Abs811 · 02/12/2021 09:58

I have something similar, would love to hear from others.

@Bumps13 did you ever get to the bottom of yours?

BammBamm · 02/12/2021 10:01

I had exactly this. I only noticed because it was causing discomfort and then I started having a prod around.
The GP examined me lying down and said she couldn't feel it but then could when I was standing up.
I had blood tests which flagged low ferritin and an ultrasound which came back as normal and I haven't heard anything since (the GP receptionist informed me of blood results when I rang).

Abs811 · 04/01/2022 08:12

@BammBamm do you still have this issue? Mine calmed down for weeks but I have it again now. Like you, nothing can be felt when lying down but it feels very firm when standing up, under right rib area. Can you tell me what your lump feels like and how big it feels

Bumps13 · 04/01/2022 08:44

@Abs811 sorry for slow reply. I had an ultrasound of my whole abdomen and they couldn’t see anything. They also scanned me standing up. I had blood tests which were all normal apart from slightly raised vitamin b12. When I had the scan I struggled to locate the lump and felt like a right idiot. I had been prodding it a lot and getting worried then decided to leave it alone and wait for the scan. A few days later and I could then feel it really easily. It’s like some days it’s more obvious than others, but only when standing. Can’t feel it at all laying down. Mine is under right ribs and feels very hard and alien. About the size of my fist but more of a fat sausage shape. I don’t get pain when I prod it but I get sensations in that area through the day and also a bit lower down that are not painful as such, but I’m aware of them. I am aware of pain/pressure there more after eating, but not every time. It’s all very weird! What does yours feel like and does it cause any pain?

BammBamm · 04/01/2022 08:50

@Abs811 yes I still have it but I have seen the GP who has reassured me that the scan was normal and they think it is my kidney that can be felt because I am slim.

Abs811 · 04/01/2022 09:37

@Bumps13 glad your scan was all clear. Mine is roughly the size of a fist and just under my right ribs. It doesn't have a particular shape I don't think, it just feels like a hard area but what I find odd is, I have it on some days and other days, it's not there at all. No pain really, maybe mild discomfort sometimes. It completely dissappear when lying down.

@bammbamm, it's interesting you say you are slim as I am slim too and I did wonder if I was feeling my kidney, but what baffles me is why I can't feel it all on someday, and other days I can

Abs811 · 05/01/2022 08:58

@Bumps13 do you have gallstones by any chance? I do, but not sure if this is the reason for my lump. What you have sounds very much like me. So confusing...

Bumps13 · 05/01/2022 09:09

@Abs811 no I don’t have gallstones. That would have been picked up in my scan I’m sure. I am also very slim and my lump comes and goes as in more obvious some days than others and then I get really alarmed. When I had my scan I couldn’t find it which was embarrassing! I see a cranial osteopath and she has said it could be my kidney dropping down. I wonder if the coming and going could be to do with hydration?? Who knows. Like you say, it’s confusing.

Abs811 · 05/01/2022 09:18

I am exactly the same! So odd. Glad you don't have gallstones!

WillWeBeOk · 03/10/2023 13:57

Did anyone ever find out what this was? I have a totally different shape to my right side of the abdomen and it’s a bit worrying!

StanleyGoodspeed · 03/10/2023 14:32

some kind of hernia?
