My DD has suffered constipations for over a year - anyone else had any experience?

Can anyone help I'm at my wits end

My dd is 2.7 and has suffered constipations since last October. We have seen the GP several times and been refered to a GP with special interest in this area who I have seen twice and due to see again on Thurs. DD is on Lactulose (has been on this mianly for a year) 5ml morn and night plus senna. We've tried Movocal but that didn't work.

This weekend she has been particularly bad. It's a catch 22 because she will now hold her poo so as to not have to go as it's so painful for her so "bits" are passed but not enough to clear her system. This in turn has now resulted in her having the most horrendous nappy rash raw & weeping. (she's not trained as not interested)

I will see this GP with special interests on Thurs but think I will ask to be refered to a hospital/consultant as over a year is a bit much don't you think?

Any any advice would be greatfully received.

we battled with dd1 and this for 4 years. It is so hard, i know.
A few things helped. When you know she needs to go, try blowing bubbles as its impossible to blow out and hold in. Warm baths and tummy massgae, and "cycle" her legs.
Try and keep her mind off going, so read a book. Try and get her in sitting postion by laying down. So lay her on her back and hold her knees bend, upto her tum

Oddly enough, we tried all the meds, saw docs blah blah, the thing that worked best for us was Yakult in the morning Honestly it works wonders and tastes sweet, all natural and no nasty meds.

Hope some of this helps. And hugs to you. email me if you want [email protected]

Second the probiotic drinks for some reason ds always has runny poos after them.

Wow thanks I'm off to Sainsburys in the morning for some Yakult's

Thank you so much it's nice to get some "real" advice rather than the Doctors blurb.

let me know how it goes, and good luck

07 - I was going to suggest Movicol - shocked that it didn't work for your dd. How long did she take it for and how many sachets did you get up to? It can take a while to work- for some it's explosive pretty much straight away but others not. Lactulose is crap IME.

SMBK It was so long ago that we tried the Movicol I honestly can't remember how long we tried it for. I think the problem was that she just wouldn't take it so couldn't get it into her. I may ask GP about trying this again on Thursday, thanks.

Yes - that can be a problem. dd used to have the paediatric version - but the plain one, not flavoured, she took it OK, but you could try it in juice.

I think you can go up to about 8 satchets a day (from memory) maybe more, just increasing day by day until you get a result. Then find a level that suits and keeps her regular. Good luck with it - it's horrible to be permanently constipated, so uncomfortable.

Hi just thought I'd let you know how it's going.

DD finally passed a motion on Tuesday morning after 4 days of severe pain. I bought some probiotic drinks on Tuesday and sometimes she will drink some and sometimes she says she doesn't like it! How can a child not like sweet tasting strawberry milk? Anyway she did drink nearly a whole one yesterday and she passed another motion. I don't know if it was the drink or the medication that I had increased.

Specialist GP yesterday was actually very good and we have talked about getting the right combination of medication to keep DD going more regularly. GP also wants us to go back in a weeks time to see how things have gone. I've started a diary so we can track things.

I feel a little more positive and supported by GP. I will keep trying with the Actimel and maybe even buy some probiotic yoghurts to see if they go down any better.

Thanks you so much for your advice and support.
