Try Lansinoh. Great on nipples, great on bottoms.

Powder thing (correct me if I'm wrong) - apparently talc has been found in tumours.

MrsBadger · 03/12/2007 18:28

wasn't there some issue with people using clouds of it and it leading to breathing difficulties?

Have you tried Drapolene?

MrsBadger · 03/12/2007 18:32

apparently cornstarch is the stuff if you want a non-talc powder option - Neal's Yard do a posh version but regular cornflour might be worth a shot.

jorange5 · 03/12/2007 18:33

the body can't break it down so has to form scar tissue around it. So if you get lots of it internally (when nappy changing) you can end up with scar tissue in the reproductive organs.

orangehead · 03/12/2007 18:33

I think it was that babies were breathing it in and forming a layer of talc on thier lungs, I think.

bumbly · 03/12/2007 19:18

wow - thanks for the info

been using it literally in bum crease right up to anal aperture and it was helping but yes lingering it was ....

surely the powder issue/non absorbing issue would apply with corn starch as well although ...

idea seems great

I don't know about what inhaled talc does, but fear of ovarian cancer sounds quite far-fetched.

First of all, baby girls have hymens, which means nothing gets in there.

Second, even assuming your daughter has an imperfect hymen, there is no way a speck of dust (or talk) could possibly travel all the way up to her ovaries. Sperm manage to swim upstream because they have flagella. It would be a very ambitious and resourceful speck of talc that can go all the way up the uterus, somehow pass through the cervix, and then travel through the vagina into an ovary

talcom powder dries the skin out it takes all natural moisture from skin which is actually needed

if you wash in warm water then use zinc and castor oil it does work or any oil based i find zinc and castor oil has always without fail helped

bubblagirl · 03/12/2007 19:44

Powders
Powders are not necessary. There is concern that talc powder and other powders may be breathed in by a baby, and this may cause some health problems. The yeast that causes thrush feeds on cornstarch powder (corn flour), so this powder should not be used either.

TooTickyDoves · 03/12/2007 19:46

Tui Bee Balme is a miracle cream

bubblagirl · 03/12/2007 19:46

also if it doesnt dissapear after few days it could be caused by something other than nappy rash

so see your gp my ds had bad nappy rash but i find bathing it in warm water and air drying it and then applying zinc and castor oil really does make such a difference and letting skin breathe if you can used to leave ds with no nappy on while at home to help prevent skin sweating

Metanium is MAGIC stuff!! Honestly, someone on here recommended it and within two days rash had vanished. You can buy over counter just careful not to get on carpet or clothes as it stains yellow.

LIZS · 03/12/2007 21:13

Agree with trying Metanium. However it is possible there is a fungal infection like thrush or eczema, especially if it's in the crease rather than on a flat area of skin , and you'd need a prescribed cream for it.

onesparklytwinklymummy · 03/12/2007 21:33

I loved that Avent talc which is a cream until it dries to a powder on the skin. No inhaling of stuff & no looking like a smowman when you have finished with wriggly baby.

bumbly · 03/12/2007 22:13

rash is in anal aperture to clarify - red area with tiny blisters perhaps???

tried bepanteh
tried zo

all cause skin to stay ever so wet and worsen matters

will try metanium tomorrow??

Is it thrush?

bumbly · 03/12/2007 22:17

what does it look like?

Many moons ago, I went through an aromatherapy phase

I remember adding a few drops of lavender and blue chamomile to a new pot of zinc and caster oil cream and it worked beautifully (and smelt lovely) I can't remember the exact recipe but maybe you could find an aromatherapy 'recipe' book? (you have to be careful to keep to the right amount of drops)

Furball · 03/12/2007 22:39

talc has a similar make up to asbestos and if inhaled, the particles will stay in the lungs. Hence the teeny tiny writing on the side that says 'dangerous if inhaled' or something similar.

Cornflour gives the same result as talc but without the health risk.

The Nappy Lady has some great advice on nappy rash and also has some alternatives for cleaning.

I used the camomile & honey tea on ds and it cleared things up before they got too far established.
